Are you running all of your Important and Optional Windows Updates, as eventually it should offer what's left of SP1 to install after most of its component Updates are delivered.

What is the exact problem? Is this a Clean Reinstall Windows 7? If so you should use the latest media with SP1.

Yes all updates are installed with the exception of KB 976932 error 80004005

Try this first: Installation of Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 fails with errors 0x8004a029 or 0x80004005 - E_FAIL

Then if necessary Learn how to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1)

Normally SP1 should come in via Windows Updates if they are working properly. But if not you can try installing it from its standalone installer as provided in second tutorial above.

    Thanks Greg
I have tried all the above many times and come to conclusion that the only way I will be able to install SP1 is to do a complete factory reinstall meaning I would lose years of work even with a backup.

Why would you lose years of work? You can always rescue files before reinstalling. Then once you have a perfect install with our help, save it as a backup image so you can easily reimage C in 20 minutes if it ever becomes irreparable. This is how a modern OS is handled.

I would not run Factory Recovery which is the worst possible install of Win7, when you can do a Clean Reinstall Windows 7 to instead have the best possible install of Win7 one can have instead of the worst. Factory Recovery is larded with bloatware and useless duplicate utilities that interfere with better versions built into the OS. As long as you run the Factory Install you''ll never even experience native Win7 performance but are using a crippled version of it. Why not the best?

    Thanks Greg
I understand that but would I not be wiping out all the programmes I have on my computer.

Yes, you'd need to reinstall your programs, which I would do slowly over time to gauge performance after each.

To determine if you need reinstall: Win7 should be instantaneous and never hang on adequate tested hardware. If you meet this performance standard with the corruption that currently exists then you can proceed with the troubleshooting steps given, reporting back as you go.

If you have less than this performance then I would reinstall and save a backup image so you have a method to quickly reset your PC if Win7 ever becomes irreparable. This is something that should already be in place, but if not now is the chance to do it with our help.

Thank you for your time Greg

As I have managed without SP1 over many years I think I will just ignore installling SP1.
I only wanted to try out IE11.

    Thanks again.

Bob, you don't even have Windows 7 if you don't have SP1. What it is instead is a cripple at huge risk for infection. I'd view it as one of the most pitiful cases I've seen here out of tens of thousands.

If you'll focus on instead having the very best Win7 instead of a pathetic cripple, I will help you and even volunteer to connect once you get to the desktop to set it all up for you perfectly in an hour's time, even help you install any programs you're worried about.

Keep in mind that we have helped 1.2 million consumers achieve a perfect Clean Reinstall Windows 7
without a single complaint so there is no reason to believe yours would be different and every reason to believe in your case above all others that it would make all the difference in the world - since we're talking about literally the best install of Win7 one can find in the world.
