Win 7 Ultimate, clean install, get 0x8004FF91 trying to install MSE
This machine is a Gateway FX-Series laptop, which I bought used a couple of months ago. It came without a drive, so I bought a new 2TB drive to go along with it. I installed Win 7 Ultimate onto it and just a small handful of other programs so far -- a couple of browsers and utilities for my digital camera -- but I have not installed any anti-spyware or anti-malware onto it yet. internet-wise, so far I've used it only for a bit of Web activity (visiting a couple of forums that I'm a regular at, and Netflix, mostly).
I used Microsoft Security Essentials on my previous laptop (and my desktop) with good results, so I would prefer to continue using it. Unfortunately, it errors out on me, generating the above code, when I attempt to install it. Following your instructions, I came here, ran the diagnostic utility and it gave me this:
The only thing that jumps out at me are the "File Mismatch" statements. If they're the problem, I have no idea what to do with them. As far as my competency level goes, back in the old DOS and (for me) OS/2 days, I considered myself to be an expert. These days, I just hang on for the ride. If shutting things down and restarting the machine don't fix things, I'm pretty much lost.
