    Windows 7 automatic updates disaster

Well I just saw this in the news sectiom.

My Windows 7 desktop Home Premium with automatic updates worked till two nights ago.

New automatic updates yesterday froze most of the operating software and I had to wipe it completely clean to re-install everthing.

I patiently set up everything I have again today. First time round 59 updates went through. Second time round 183 (!!) updates and now the screen said failure to reconfigure, reverting changes.

I was told this has happened to MANY PEOPLE. The reverting has been going on for a while. How long should I wait? Overnight and then poweroff? Sounds like a reasonble gamble? If it crashes then I reinstall again. If it doesn't I perminantly switch off updates (I've had it) -- how do you disable updates please? Or set it up so that it let you pick and choose which updates you want?

    Thanks in advance

I always install the updates myself. Not for the reasons that you indicate, but because I want to decide what goes into my computer.

Don't install too many updates at a time. Do it in batches of e.g. 10 or 12. And if things go wrong, there is always a restore point from before the updates were installed. That is if you have system protection on and gave it some shadowstorage.

    Thank you guys. That's helpful.

Since I have spent all night last nigth and all day today replicating everything I have, it's no longer a question of how. Just how long the second time round. I love Microsoft :))
