    Jan W7 update failing

    PC is W7 Ultimate 64 bit SP1
    Kept fully up to date.
Last update I can see is security update 17 Dec KB3025390 nothing shows after that date

Last 2 days ... on PC shutdown get the 'installing updates 1-5 message" then it shuts down OK

On next start up , goes though several screen, including one which says applying 1156 ... (too fast to read rest) and then starting window again ... this time get the start up music then eventually get the :
Preparing to configure windows - do not turn off your computer

Left for more than 60 mins ... goes no further ....
If I switch off and it asks which option on restart .. I choose safe mode+ nw ... it starts, gives a quick message something along lines on updates failed to apply, reboots into normal mode and works OK.

Until shutdown where it goes back into installing updates 1-5 again

As it has happened last 5 times .... assuming I am in a loop ....
Is there a fix or current known issue?

    Hello there,

Please click the start menu, type Event Viewer and hit enter. Click the drop down icon to the left of custom views, right-click administrative events and select save all events in custom view as. Choose a file name for it and save it in your desired location.

Please upload the files to a sharing site, such as OneDrive then provide me with the link.

    Thanks,
    Legade

Worked around issue, turned off auto install, and installed them one at a time. Re-booting after each one.
Be good to know cause though ..
In case I have underlying issue.

One possible cause is the fact that you appear not to have had a 'normal' shutdown for over a month (I didn't check back further) this can result in things getting out of sync, and updates failing.

If I'm honest, I'm surprised that the updates installed individually, since the errors for all of them were of the '643' type, which normally indicated serious corruption.

I would recommend sorting out your shutdown failures by posting in the Performance and Maintenance section here, where there are people more experienced than us in such things.

I get no alarm or message until 2 days ago it shuts down every time with no problems.
How would I know it is not shutting down properly.

The only definite way to know is to check the Event logs - every time the machine has rebooted recently, there has been the entry....
    Log Name: System
    Source: EventLog
    Date: 18/01/2015 19:33:08
    Event ID: 6008
    Task Category: None
    Level: Error
    Keywords: Classic
    User: N/A
    Computer: Rick-PC
    Description:
The previous system shutdown at 19:31:23 on ‎18/‎01/‎2015 was unexpected.
