I do understand, however, from other people posting on Sevenforums and other sites that these multiple languages are coming into the Home system somehow, and goofing everything up. So it's not just me.

My final decision then is to NOT do a repair install. I don't understand the steps. When I look at the instructions, all the words in the red box are just gobbledygook to me, and these are just the warnings. I don't know how to find a Windows disk, and I don't know if the registry key I've uncovered is the right thing, so I absolutely cannot afford to screw this up and disable my machine.

Instead, I'm going to hobble along for now with 17 updates failing time and again, to wait for the free Windows 10 update that's due to arrive in the Autumn, and in the meantime, I'm going to buy a Mac.

I thank everyone for their time and suggestions. Clearly, from the hundreds of postings about this on line, on this forum and numerous others, this is not an unusual problem, and a repair install seems to be the ultimate answer. Unfortunately, that is a multi-step process that is far beyond my ken.
Honestly brother, as long as you have a legit copy of windows and an activation key. Following the steps in the Clean repair link I put above really couldn't be easier, even if you do not have a windows disc, there are links in the tutorial to show you how to get an ISO

Grab the files off your harddrive that you want, hit up the clean install tutorial, then Backup Complete Computer - Create an Image Backup and you'll have a hole new beginning and a whole lot less headaches

I put off doing any of the repair install/clean install because I just didn't have the time, confidence, nor window of opportunity, plus couldn't cope if it went wrong. As usual, buried my head in the sand. I also bought a Mac and was waiting to upgrade the Windows 7 machine to the new Windows 10 in the autumn.

OMG!!! This morning, all those 18 perpetual updates just installed!

The only thing I can think that I did was I forced shut down a couple of days ago when my machine got hung up with installations (which have always failed up till now). Then I started in safe mode, which prompted the machine to tell me it was unconfiguring some of the changes.

I did this yesterday, too, after something similar happened.

When I booted up this morning, it actually installed the updates.

I wanted to share in case anyone else is having such problems with updater (and need to update the new updater before you can update) and is wanting to try something low-tech first.

This is not putting down the experts at all. I know it's a fluke, but I wanted to share, because now my problem is solved!

Good news at last!

Glad it seems to be fixed now.

Good luck!

Kpat23, when you get the time to make sure the system is clean. I would install malwarebytes without installing the trial, run a scan. I would also run a full virus scan with the virus program you have installed, if you don't have one installed, I would recommend Microsoft Security Essentials it is real easy to use. If you have a backup usb hard drive, I would recommend you learning how to do an image backup using Macrium Reflect 5.xxxxx free version. I made mistakes when I first did that. Try to download those files directly from their website, if not try downloading from MajorGeeks not cnet. I think Macrium Reflect has a free 6 version but not sure if it has been released.
