I have also tried it on my computer and it doesn't download...

    this url... https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/down...n.aspx?id=5842
and "If your download does not start after 30 seconds, Click here"
simply takes back to previous page - hm

Yes, the initial download page isn't what I'd expected, but for me the Click Here link brings up a popover screen with the links to all versions of the download. This works fine for me.

However - this link should get to the expected download page... https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/down...s.aspx?id=5842

...and this one should get the download directly. http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...976932-X64.exe

"A system error prevented the service pack from installing..."
"Download system readiness tool...." (have done that countless times)
The windowsupdate.log file was timed at 10.39 this morning... (downloaded file to install and last fail at 13.55) so tried to update again... and here is the log...

It looks like there may be corruption in the SoftwareDistribution folder.

    Open an Elevated Command Prompt
    Run the following commands

    NET STOP WUAUSERV
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
    NET START WUAUSERV

    reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

    Then try installing SP1 again.

    Hi running "NET STOP WUAUSERV"
"The windows update service could not be stopped."
Is it then worth doing the next two commands? etc...

Not really - the file is in use, obviously.
Try doing it in Safe Mode.

That's OK - if you get that response, then carry on.
