No joyl. Unactivated flag came up again. Talked to MS a long time. finally came up with a Product Key number that he accecpted and he said he was sorry, I would have to reinstall the original product. I hope that's what I can do from the "recovery" partition, but who knows. Once again, thank you all for all your efforts.
Thank you for getting back to me, NoelDP. MS and I finally understood each other, and the fellow said "That number is accepted." "Which means?" "You have permission to reinstall this product on this computer." He sounded genuinely sympathetic. But you know, after two days of work, the only thing that made the installation work was the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers. They stopped everything untill they were downloaded on another computer and put into the down one. You were right all along. Got the new hardware working and now rebuilding just the system. Thanks again.
It's not always the solution to these errors, but it works about 80% of the time (unless MS's borked December update KB3004394 is involved).
