    not running Genuine Windows message

The problem appears to have been resolved thanks to NoelDP. This is attested by fact that 1) I now can perform windows updates and 2) I no longer get the message indicating I'm not running genuine windows. However, when I go to link to get confirmation that I have genuine windows, I get a popup window on screen with message "windows validation in process - This may take a few minutes, do not navigate from this page. The message has a green rotating circle indicating it is "working", but process never terminates. An hour later I had to shut it down. Why can't I get confirmation that I have genuine windows which I know I have?

the only error dated yesterday (24th) in the application log, is this..
    Failed to create restore point (Process = C:\Windows\system32\rundll32.exe /d srrstr.dll,ExecuteScheduledSPPCreation; Description = Scheduled Checkpoint; Error = 0x80070422).
Looking for related errors in the System log finds this...
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
    AFS
Let's have a close look at that.
Please open an ELevated Command Prompt and run the following commands...

    REG QUERY HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\AFS /S
    REF QUERY HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_AFS /S

    post the results

cannot get confirmation that have genuine windows running

    NoelDP,

I'm attaching results of query you provided. Please note that second query command was not recognized. I thought perhaps you meant REG instead of REF so i tried running command with REG but still was not recognized. I'm posting both not running Genuine Windows Validation Code 0x8004FE21-reg-query.gif

not running Genuine Windows Validation Code 0x8004FE21-ref-query.gif results. Thanks

    Sorry - got sidetracked.
I think the ASF is related to Andrew File System support - possibly from a college network?
If that's correct, then we can probably ignore the appearances in the logs - but it shouldn't be causing problems with System restore or VSS unless you're attempting to divert output to the AFS storage.
I'll ask around and see if anyone knows anything about it.

Hello Noel this is about all I know about it have seen it referenced before but never took much notice because what it seems to imply is using a file system other than what we do but I stand to be corrected.

kitnx, please review the System Protection configuration. Make sure that the selected partitions exist and thre are no 'duplicates'
    Local Disk (C:) (System) Off
    Local Disk (C:) (Missing) On
The volume labels might be different on your machine, but you get the idea.

This happens very infrequently when the backup location is changed to a removable device or
a 3rd party imaging application is in play. In your case, AFS might be the culprit - not sure.

Correct the System Protection so that your local partitions are the ones being protected
    - if there are in fact ghost partitions.

cannot get confirmation that have genuine windows running

My windows 7 home premium runs better than it has in a long time. Even though I cannot get confirmation that I have a genuine version of windows I consider original (not running genuine windows) problem solved.
Thanks are due to all that have taken the time to respond to my issue. So long for now until the next computer crisis.
