Windows Updates and WIndows Defender not working

I have an HP Pavilion dm3 working with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. It says that there are 31 updates available but when I install them they all failed and it asks me to restart the computer which I do but it stays the same and now the windows defender and microsoft security essentials won't turn on. Actually it deleted microsoft security essentials and won't let me install it again because it says some component is missing. Please help me. I don't know what else to do.

By the way, since these problems started my connection to the internet keeps appearing as limited connection...can this be related?

    Thanks in advance!

When MSE is installed it will turn off Defender. That is the way it is designed and that is normal.
