Windows Update error 80073701 since October

When I run Windows Update I am requested to install new Windows Update software. I press "Install now" and after a while I get an error message: "Windows couldn't search for new updates. An error occurred while checking for new updates for your computer. Error(s) found: Code 80073701".

I believe it started back in October when the Internet Explorer update to version 11 didn't work. So no updates through Windows Update have gone through since then.

I installed KB947821 manually but nothing changed.

    (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, Service Pack 1. Fujitsu Q510, Pentium G630T 2.30 GHz, 4 GB.)

    Sorry - been snowed under

The error here appears to be fairly major - and may have been made worse, if you've attempted to use any form of Registry Cleaner in an attempt to fix the problem.

I'll see what I can do about it when I can clear my backlog

I've tried quite a lot but not a registry cleaner as far as I can remember. Mostly Microsoft's tools and such things.

Any help at any time will be much appreciated! (I'll be away from my PC a week from Friday.)
