Microsoft now offering PUPs in Updates

Watch those optional windows updates. Skype is now offered as an optional update.

I just notice that when I refreshed windows update.

    Sorry if posted elsewhere.

Microsoft now offering PUPs in Updates

Yep, MS Skype for Windows Desktops just showed up in my update list along with the usual daily MSE definitions. I have the "show me but let me decide" option set so I was able to hide the update and move on. If you have the Automatic Update set, I suspect you'll have Skype popping up on your screen and wonder where it came from. I don't even have a camera on this machine so I wonder what logic MS used to send Skype as an update?

I install my own too and hide skype. I was very surprised that MS would resort to something like this. Possibly with 10 we will not have the option to prevent any updates.

I just hid the Skype update just a little while ago. I do not have Skype installed on my computer nor do I want it.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised as MS has been slipping unwanted programs into updates for quite some time. I'm guessing but it's probably to get user numbers up in preparation for selling ad space in Skype.

Folks you all are catching on. Microsoft new business methods is they will give you a candy bar but they want control of everything.
Including slipping in little goodies using Auto Windows 7 Updates.

I just hide both Windows Updates.
No Skype on my systems either.

I don't trust Windows Updates or Microsoft anymore.
I treat the Updates like a PUP down load site that you uncheck what you don't want.

We need a UnChecky program for Windows Updates.

    I'm not surprised at all,
I am sort of surprised I haven't seen Bing desktop search or Onedrive desktop again or even windows essentials showing back up

Since MS wrapped Messenger into Skype I suppose they see it as some sort of benefit. I just don't need it. Send me an email or call me on the phone. :)

Gosh, I guess I'm really "disconnected" these days. I still have a flip-phone.

I use to get offered Bing updates and hid them.
I never installed them and they aren't listed in my hidden updates anymore.
I wonder if MS is replacing Bing Desktop with Skype Desktop as a step in their "rebranding" ... ?
