In the case of "Most of the spyware and nagware updates", yes, the analogy is invalid, while in other cases it is still relevant. We also don't know how Microsoft will combine the security updates with MS "spyware and nagware" (gotto love your definition :)) in the near future. It isn't that hard for MS to require optional updates for security updates.
Please keep in mind that I am not arguing against keeping a tab on updates, quite the opposite. Despite knowing that keeping the "spyware and nagware" off my systems is an uphill battle, I am still doing it, even if it is a lost cause. Over my dead keyboard Microsoft can install their junk updates...
