Josh Mayfield, a software engineer and developer for GWX Control Panel, said that he has been getting several reports from users that the upgrade option keeps popping up on their Win 7 and 8.1 PCs several times a day.

“Over Thanksgiving weekend I started getting reports that the Windows Update “AllowOSUpgrade” setting was getting flipped back on a number of peoples’ PCs,” he said.

In addition, he mentioned that the setting resets itself at least once a day if the user switches his PC off.

    Interesting.

I'm guessing that could have something to do with one or more important/recommended/optional W7 updates that have been installed since the beginning of 2015?

Maybe there's more Windows 10 related stuff in some of those updates than we already know about?

I still seem to be immune (according to GWX Control Panel) because I did a clean install of Windows 7 just recently and I didn't install anything other than security updates dated from the start of 2015. Actually, I did do the time zone updates and maybe one or two others after checking them all out carefully... no W10 stuff, no telemetry, no Windows Update Client updates and no MS malicious software removal tools. All hidden (for now).

If W10 still manages to 'sneak' it's way onto this PC (and my 9 year old HP laptop which also has a clean install of W7) then I think it will be time for a W7/Linux Mint dual boot - with W7 at SP1 level only and no internet access whatsoever. I've been thinking about that more and more lately.

I found on one of my PCs that the optional updates introduced the W10 nagging. Solution was to revert to restore to a previous image and avoid optional updates.
On my personal/main PC I just don't bother with optional updates anymore. Is this wise ... who knows but it's what I do. Even with important updates I have a look before the update and create a system image before I install them.

Do not check "give me recommended updates the way I receive important updates"
    and choose
"Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"

*********It really is all a pain but that's the way it is *************

This helps to solve corruption in windows 7 with windowsupdate!!

There are some questions about the usefulness of removing the mentioned windows 10 related winupdates.
Incidentally I discovered that removing mentioned updates solved my problem with very slow working or hanging of windows updates.
And also aborting windows update resulted in failed or corrupt installation of update!
I was in a state of reinstalling windows when problems remained occurring also wit manual updating or using alternatives like AutoPatcher.
After removing the mentioned updates windows update works like a charm again!
Also for me update to Windows 10 was no option because my Pentium 4 processor was not compatible for the upgrade.
So this action is very usefull, thank you very much Tookeri!

Updated: added KB 3022345 to the list.
And highlighted updates that are only for Windows 8

    • KB 3035583 - According to Microsoft, this update enables "additional capabilities for Windows Update notifications when new updates are available".
    • KB 2952664 - Labeled a compatibility upgrade for upgrading Windows 7, its purpose is to "make improvements to the current operating system in order to ease the upgrade experience to the latest version of Windows".
    • KB 2976978 - A compatibility update for Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 which "performs diagnostics on the Windows system [..] to determine whether compatibility issues may be encountered when the latest Windows operating system is installed.
    • KB 3021917 - Does the same as KB 2976978 but on Windows 7.
    • KB 3044374 - This update for Windows 8.1 enables systems to upgrade from the current operating system to a later version of Windows.
    • KB 2990214 - Does the same as KB 3044374 but on Windows 7.
    • KB 3022345 - Update to enable the Diagnostics Tracking Service in Windows (Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8.1)

Do the following to check if an update is installed:

    1. Tap on the Windows-key, type cmd and hit enter.
    2. Type powershell and hit enter.
    3. Use the command get-hotfix -id KB3035583 to find out whether the update is installed
    4. To speed things up, query for all updates in a single command like this:
      get-hotfix -id KB3035583,KB2952664,KB2976978,KB3021917,KB3044374,KB2990214,KB3022345

You can use the command line to remove Windows Patches as well.

    1. If you are still in Powershell type exit to leave.
    2. Use the command wusa /uninstall /kb:2952664 to uninstall a patch

I don't understand the point as to why someone would want to remove them.
Except that for some of us in "industry" win10 breaks our proprietary software and then I have to remote into my clients pc's every week and reverting them to 7. I work for a company that sells and maintains software that is not win10 compatible and we sell and maintain our clients win7 pro machines for them. Its really a pain that an employee that has little or no computer experience can upgrade their system to 10 and create hours of work bringing down the whole restaurant or store or bar just because MS is forcing this garbage on us.

I am getting the impression more and more that Win 10 is the "Edsel of OS's". I have not seen very many people who are really happy with it like those who raved when Win 7 came out.

I believe the Edsel was more dependable so I wouldn't use that association to win-10
