Hi,
Depending on their windows update settings 10 might just download and they might be prompted to install it.
And now I've received another:
Look out: Microsoft shifts Windows 10 to ?Recommended? update, automatic download | ExtremeTech

Looks like we will have to check all proposed updates on next Update thuesday!!!
But then it is something I will be doing every month from now on.
Luckily for me, I've never set Windows update to Automatic. Even back when using Windows versions Pre-XP I always had it set to check only. Only because I've always been curious as to what I'm about to install. I used to recommend to others to keep it set to Automatic. I wouldn't do that now though.
Yep if memory serves me the release of windows live essentials 2011 woke me up to these disruptive "Recommended/ Optional" updates removing existing programs
Photo gallery 2009 was way too good and wlpg is just awful.
I wish I knew where Metro Uk got that information. I am not saying the article is wrong or right. I have been trying to keep updated with windows 10 news articles. The last I read, If automatic update is checked it would download but 10 wouldn't install till users confirm it. If manually selected, it wouldn't download or install unless checked. It also said it wouldn't affect businesses, I actually read business would be affected unless Meto is talking about enterprise customers but I also read they are going to push the upgrade on the enterprise customers as well.
This is a little concerning if accurate.Even if your device is set to update manually via a user decision, Windows 10 still may get downloaded when Windows Update selects it as desired.
I wouldn't pay much attention to what the Metro says anyway. Let's face it, there's been a lot of misinformation in some of these papers. I've seen some articles say you may wake up one day with Windows 10 installed on your machine.
For starters you need to accept the EULA so that's nonsense.
As long as the updates in this thread have been avoided then Windows 10 won't be downloaded onto machines.
The 3 main ones which work together in the downloading/installing are the Windows Update Client updates along with KB2952664 and KB3035583. If you avoid all 3 it shouldn't be downloaded.
Although who knows what tricks MS may come up with next.
