    For me I fixed the problem a few times - or so I thought but actually even after fixing with total RAM usage down to a reasonable 2.25GB - 2.5GB during windows update checks it would reach over 3GB. The problem would return one month or two months later.

    Finally fixed and RAM usage during Windows Update checks is little above that shown when the computer is being used normally.

    Total RAM usage is currently usually between 1.6GB - 1.8GB
    Total RAM usage during Windows Update checks is never more than 2.2GB

    The fix was not easy.

    Net framework 4.6.1 is clearly a optional/ Recommended update why are you installing it unless a program/ game requires it :/
    It was in recommended for me (but not checked default)

    I already read about GWX control panel in previous threads. As I had done so many things (including register changes) I had not yet downloaded it.
    Have done so now and let it run.
    Result seems OK - see attachment.

    So now : Should I unhide all the hiden updates and run them again?

    And : GWX control panel is now starting with windows. I do not like that. Can I take it out of startup and then start GWX control panel before installing the windows updates?

    Amazone - just turn the Monitor mode off in GWX control panel, that way it won't start with Windows. It isn't really needed. Just check the GWX control panel again after every update client update to make sure the settings haven't changed.

    It's a lot to remember but without going into all details as it would require one enormous post:

    Run MS Fixit 50202.msi then disconnect network adapter and disable windows update service. Reboot.

    Run MS Fixit 50202.msi again. Then manually run all the steps in this batch file:

    Option 2 Step 1: Windows Update - Reset

    Open the file with your text editor and run each step manually one line at a time from an elevated command prompt switching to powershell where necessary.

    Check for leftovers after completion and unlock and force delete leftovers.

    Note: Manually confirm deletion of the following:

    "%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Network\Downloader\qmgr*.dat"

    Disable windows update service and reboot.

    Run MS Fixit 50202.msi again.

    Disable windows update service and reboot.

    Run Extended Disk Cleanup to include Windows Update cleanup:

    Reboot.

    Install a version of Windows Update Client/ Agent. Personally I used:

    Downloaded and saved to Desktop then force installed from command line:

    "C:\Users\Your Username\Desktop\Full path to installer.msu" /wuforce

    Configure Windows Update to "Notify but do not download" and uncheck "Give me recommended updates"

    Disable Windows Update service.

    Wait 24 hours (until after next scheduled windows update check) then enable Windows Update service.

    Check that it is still configured - Windows Update "Notify but do not download" and uncheck "Give me recommended updates"

    Run an update check.

    Hide any updates from the list posted above (wusa /uninstall /kb:number)

    Only install important updates.

    I had a rather unusual occurrence this morning. I check my Windows Updates and decided to load six updates that were listed a "Security Updates for Windows 7". They were as follows:
    KB3126593
    KB3115858
    KB3134214
    KB3126446
    KB3124280
    KB3126587

    I have a SSD so normally when I boot the Windows Logo never shows. It only shows the four colored dots but it boots before the dots are joined into the Logo. I installed the above Updates and when I booted the PC for the updates to take effect, I did see the Windows Logo which was a Red Flag for me. After the updates were configured I restarted three times and the Windows Logo showed every time. I went back and uninstalled the six updates and now the boot is as before with only the four dots showing at boot. Something was strange with those Updates. Has anyone else run into something like that with those Updates?

    I did exclude kb890830
    I'm getting a little sick of the malicious software removal tool so I hid that one.

    Bigmck - I haven't had any issues with any security updates for a while now. I've been lucky with my PC I guess as never really had any updates cause any major issues.
    Had 18 to install today along with some security updates for Office 2007. All installed fine.

    If you want, you can use this tool (Restart Time) several times to get an average. Then install those 6 KBs one at a time - checking the restart time in between each KB install.
