I think it may be instructive, at least! - and it certainly shouldn't do any harm (apart from any problems with the patch if we do mange to get it installed - I just checked my system and can confirm that there's no response from the Yahoo search option, although my already-installed Google search works perfectly)

And what do you mean by installing only the oldest updates found? There are more than 200. How can I tell which ones are the "oldest"?

There's more than 200 waiting for install? - usually, IE11 isn't even offered until later.

the oldest are usually those with the lowest KB number

Have you done the Check for Updates?

KB3038314 should be demanding install, at least.

Windows found three updates, all of which you appear to have hidden - Which ones are these?

Does KB3038314 show as being installed? - so far as I can tell from the log, it shouldn't be.

Yes, it's that update plus two optional updates for Microsoft Security Essentials which I'm not going to install.

EDIT: I've just installed 3 more updates without any problems whatsoever.

You MUST innstall the MSE updates or it can't protect you properly. Do you have another AV installed?
