Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with 0x80070005.

    Hi all,

I'm in need of some help.

My stepdads computer stopped applying Windows updates after getting the following error: "Update Windows license and product key tokens failed with 0x80070005."

I've followed various advice and I'm now in a situation where Windows thinks it's unlicensed! I can assure you the PC has been licensed and trouble free for the past three years or so until this happened. I know the computer was taken away to a specialist and they removed some software in my absence, my step dad isn't very computer literate so getting exact information and timings is impossible.

The PC is still working, but this is a blocker to resolving another issue, so I really hope you guys can sort me out.

I've run chkdsk and scandisk, no problems there.

    Thanks in advance

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following commands

    sc sdshow plugplay
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-18" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-19" /S
    REG QUERY "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\S-1-5-20" /S

Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
