Windows Update KB915597 - is this Defender update still problematic?

    Good afternoon everyone,

I just received an alert from Windows Update that KB915597 (Windows Defender - listed as Important) is ready to install. However, when doing both a Google search and a search here, I find quite a lot of past posts going back a few years in which people have experienced significant problems after installing this particular update. Info about the update also indicates once it is installed - it cannot be uninstalled.

Given the problems that have arisen with quite a few of Microsoft's Windows Updates/patches in the past year or so - I'd prefer to be reasonably assured this "out-of-patch-Tuesday" update isn't going to cause issues. Particularly given the fact once installed, it can't be uninstalled.
(I do not see this particular update shown in the list of currently installed updates on my computer).

My question: Has anyone already downloaded/installed this update today and experienced any issues with it?

Thank you for your time and any feedback!

Are you very sure you want this. It comes from Russia.

Outpost is actually pretty well-regarded (although also a little odd )

Defender updates are issued every week (at least! - if not every day) under this KB number - It's almost never the cause of the problems people blame it for.
The problems arise because of existing malware which defender breaks.

    (For kwangroup)

Thank you for the info about your own experience!

    (For Layback Bear)

You do present a good question/observation. It has intermittently crossed my mind about what could possibly happen with the Agnitum folks in St. Petersburg - given that nation's history, current political climate, & strained-relations between Russia and a number of other countries. As with all things developed throughout our human history, intended to benefit people, anything can be corrupted or subverted to cause detriment & destruction instead...unfortunately.

IMHO, there will always be that potential risk, not just with Outpost, but other products as well. Hence, I just try to keep a watchful eye on the "state of affairs", so-to-speak, as well.

    (For Noel)

I tend to concur with your comments. One of the things about Agnitum's Outpost Security Suite/Firewall products I've noticed, is a need for more detailed "Help File Information" being readily-available to the user (within the program itself). I've found the Outpost Forums (just like the Win 7 Forums here), to have a number of quite knowledgeable, experienced individuals from whom I've received both timely and invaluable assistance.

Also, thank you for the info regarding the KB update I inquired about!

Much obliged to everyone for your respective feedback! :)

    Cheers!

    ...

Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free/ - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

    Quarantine everything it finds

    Hi Noel,

I've had MBAM Premium (lifetime license) installed for over 3 years and scanning in real-time. I added MBAE (free version) a couple of months back as well.

I ran a full scan which found nothing. I'd also just ran a full scan with the "Scan for rootkits" option enabled two days ago and again, nothing was found. Regular scans are performed every day by Outpost, MBAM, and I do at least 2 scans a day with SAS as well.

As for doing those "Quick Scans
" you mentioned for any other user accounts, I see no way to perform that. At one time, you could right-click on any file, folder, etc and there would be an option there to scan the item with MBAM...but that is no longer the case. I only have the option of scanning such with either SAS or Outpost. I'm also the sole user of this standalone computer. Both the Root Admin account and Guest account are disabled and never used.

** I did install the update I inquired about in my OP. No problems have been observed thus far.

I'm also a bit puzzled as to the reason for the scans you've requested? How do you want me to proceed at this point?

    Regards,

In the MBAM GUI look at Settings / General Settings.
Is Explorer Context menu entry set to Yes ?

Hi David, and thanks for that info! :)

That was the problem. After enabling the Context Menu entry, I did a scan of everything shown at Computer > Users >... MBAM does not report any issues.

    * In order to display all items at the above location, I had to UNCHECK the "Hide protected system operating files" and also CHECK-MARK the box to "Show hidden files, folders, etc."
After scanning was completed, I went back in and returned the settings to the way they were previously.

    Cheers!
