    Please copy theC:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop andthen compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site(preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

    Hi Noel, Thank you for all your help, it's been very much appreciated and I've learnt quite a lot from your guidance. You're an absolute gentleman for everything you've done for me and my parents computer!
    I bit the bullet a few days ago, downloaded an official Windows 7 iso file, did a repair installation and after all the updates it seems to be working as it should! I'm pleased to say that the regular microsoft updates are now installing as they should :)
