... so it looks as if it's fixed.

Try Windows Update now - do a Check for updates, and install only the oldest one found - post back with any error message if it fails.
If it goes in OK, try the rest.

    Hi Noel,
I managed to install 1 of the important updates, but the definitions files for MSE failed to install.
They seemed to install ok when I ran the updates through the MSE interface.
None of the optional updates will install, and return the error code "WindowsUpdate_80073712" "WindowsUpdate_dt000".
I ran sfc /scannow, which said there were no issues, and also ran CheckSUR...
Am I at the point where I should be considering a repair install yet?

Please post the new logs - the CheckSUR is probably the one I really need, but the CBS may help.

This is the only entry in the CheckSUR log:
    Checking Component Store
    (f) CSI Corrupt Component Keyform 0x00000000 identity amd64_4a5d5q29c6f7f65e24c414ac03c88e99_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.22616_none_f5c72c9e3d5bf927 identity and keyform do not match; keyform is wrong.

The compressed size of the CBS log is over 6mb O_o Is it ok to delete or clear the log and rerun sfc?

The forum will accept up to 8MB zipped files?

From the sound of it, I'd better take a look at the COMPONENTS hive...

I need to have alook at your COMPONENTS registry hive

Please copy theC:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS file (no extension) to your desktop andthen compress it - upload the compressed file to your favoured fileshare site(preferably Dropbox or OneDrive) and post a link.

    Thanks Noel!
For some reason DropBox is taking forever to upload the compressed components file, so I've uploaded the unaltered file and the CBS log (just in case) to NoelDP
Would love to know where to look to begin learning how to analyse and edit registry files as you do... any hints?

I'll looks at the COMPONENTS file when I get time - probably over the weekend!

Here's the relevant error from the CBS.log, anyhow...

OKay - it came down a lot quicker than I expected, and was easier to fix than I thought

(It may take a while to upload though - so try in about an hour)

    I've uploaded a file - ophae.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive

Please download and save it to your desktop.

Right-click on the file and select Extract All, andsave to the default destination (which should be a folder on the desktop)

Create a new System Restore point

Open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the followingcommands.

    Code:
    IF EXIST C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1 DEL C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.OLD1
    REN C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS COMPONENTS.OLD1
    COPY "%userprofile%\desktop\ophae\COMPONENTS" C:\Windows\System32\config

    .

If you get an error with any command, STOP THERE - donot reboot! - post for instructions.

Assuming all commands go OK, reboot, and run anotherCheckSUR scan - post the new CheckSUR.log file.
