    Another WU 80073712 error problem

At some point during last week's Patch Tuesday runs, WU began failing to install the queue of updates. Although a number of them were installed successfully, three did not and remain unwilling/unable to complete successfully -- all three fail with the cryptic error 80073712 "Windows Update encountered an unknown error". This is on a Win7 Ultimate x64 desktop I've had for a couple of years that generally hasn't experienced many issues. Nothing I've pursued through using the official MS support website vectors has resolved it, so I've come to this forum based on someone's referral.

I've tried to upload the CBS.zip file as an attachment to this post, but it's 15MB in size and the limit of 8MB apparently won't allow it to complete. The full CBS.log file is reported as 265+MB, so should I delete (or rename) it and re-run the SURT tool to get a smaller, updated version? If so, what else (if anything) should I run before the SURT (i.e., Windows Update again)?

Upload the entire compressed CBS folder to a fileshare site such as DropBox or OneDrive, and post a link to the file

Thanks -- here are links to the two most pertinent files on Dropbox:

Sorry - forgot to place the SURpersist.log in Dropbox, so have attached it here.

    I've uploaded a file - jhvaa.zip - to my OneDrive at Noel's OneDrive

    Please download and save it.

Right-click on the downloaded file, and select Extract all…
Extract to thedefault location - which will create a new folder jhvaain the same place.

Open this folder- there should be one folder inside it (Manifests)

Copy the content of the manifests folder (.manifest files) into this folder:

    C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur\Winsxs\Manifests

Now run the CheckSUR tool again (it may take a while)

Post the new CheckSUR.log file, and the CheckSUR.persist.log file.

Thanks -- Here are the two CheckSUR files; there is also a newly-created (and much smaller) CBS.log file in case you need it (uncompressed was still too large for direct upload, so it's ZIPped).

    CheckSUR is happy now
    Code:
    Summary:
    Seconds executed: 801
     Found 3 errors
     Fixed 3 errors
CSI Manifest Failed Catalog Check Total count: 3
Fixed: CSI Manifest Failed Catalog Check. Total count: 3
See if Windows Update works now - do a Check for UPdates, and attempt to install ONLY the oldest found update.
If it goes in, try the rest
If it fails, post the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file, and I'll take a look.

And I'm happy, too -- all three of the recalcitrant updates installed successfully (done in sequence, with reboots between each installation), so I'll mark this thread as "solved".

Thanks so much for your efforts, and I'm truly grateful for them -- also very glad to have discovered this forum in the (inevitable) event of some future wonky OS behavior!
