    CheckSUR Tool help

Call me stupid, but after d/ling and installing the tool, I can't figure out how to run it. I've done web searches and can find no link on how to do this. I've searched my hd for checksur.exe and it doesn't exist.

Also, which sp1 do I download? The one I did d/l want to install windows symbols. What's up with that?

    TIA

    SOLVED! :)

Description of the System Update Readiness Tool for Windows Vista, for Windows Server 2008, for Windows 7, and for Windows Server 2008 R2

This microsoft article tells you everything you need to know about the tool and how to use it.

    Are you having update problems?

To get SP1 just simply leave Windows Update, from the Control Panel, switched on and it will bring your system up to date automatically.

    RE: windows update

I've been reading the Langalist/Windows Secrets newsletter for years. Susan Bradley has been recommending to d/l sp1 manually and then install it. Seems to have fewer issues doing it that way.

I have not come across many problems with Windows 7 updates but there used to be many with Vista. The system should be left to update automatically for best results and Windows Update should not be switched off. Many updates are to block security issues which are important for your own protection. If you have a problem with Windows Update then we should be able to help you correct it, if updates are failling to install this is often a sign of a Malware infection, amongst others.

    Hello!

I know this is solved already (I think?) but for future readers.

The scans carried out by the System Update Readiness Tool are done at the same time as it is installed. Once you have installed it, it already has been run, and no further action is required.

If necessary, the log file is located at C:\Windows\Logs\CheckSUR.log

Thanks Niemiro, I was wondering if I had to find it somewhere on my pc to run it. Explaining that it installs and scans at the same time helps a ton.
