    Windows Update: Error 8007370B

    Hey All,

I'm having problems with my windows update reporting:

Windows Update Error Code 8007370B "Windows Update encountered an unknown error"

I think that the problems may stem from a time that I had to restore a system image in order to fix a different problem and to be honest, I hadn't noticed that there was an issue until I came to try to get Windows 10.

    Initially Windows Update reported:

    Most recent check: Never
    Updates installed: Never

... although I know for a fact that I've had updates on this system in the past. Hence my suspicion that it may be linked to the system image restore.

I tried to install the System Update Readiness Tool. It reported:

    Initialising installation... Done!
Installing HotFix for Windows (KB947821) (Update 1 of 1)/...

The first time I ran it, the progress bar got to about 70% and then just stopped. Left it running for several hours without change. More recently when I try to run it, the progress bar stays at 0% and won't move at all.

I had a lot of difficulty getting the CBS.log, which may point to problems. Trying to open it (as Admin or not) gave the Notepad Error:

    Access Denied

Trying to send it to compressed folder in Explorer (as Admin or not) gave the error:

File not found or no read permission

Although, looking in Properties > Security, I seem to have Read rights.

In the end, I opened both Explorer and Notepad as Admin and dragged and dropped it from Explorer to Notepad. It took a couple of minutes to open (and it's only an 85KB file) - but did finally open. I saved a copy to Desktop and then sent that copy to compressed folder. Hopefully, that should be OK.

After running the SFC scan, for the first time Windows Update correctly checked for updates and found a bunch of updates to do. Trying to actually install them just returned us to the 8007370B error.

    Hopefully you can help....

Lol... just after posting, I noticed that I had a funny process running "msosync.exe" which is the office syncing thing. Exited MS Office Syncing in the system tray and all of a sudden my Update started running. It's now installing update 7 of 21.

Is it possible that msosync.exe was causing the issues somehow?

Either way, somehow, something somewhere seems now suddenly to have worked after a weekend of trying to get this thing to work. Perhaps just posting my issue here was enough for the Fates to decide it was time for a laugh....
