Can I use OEM Windows 7 Product Key to activate Windows on BRAND NewPC

    Hi there,

I have a Gateway DX-4822 that I bought in 2010. I am planning to build a custom pc and will probably be switching from Intel to AMD.

I have read that OEM License keys are linked to motherboards and can't be used on a new rig, but some people have mentioned that it's possible to call Microsoft during installation and lie about the situation to get Windows activated on new computer.

These threads are 1-2 years old, so I was just wondering if this is still a possibility? Will save me over $100.

Further, I know this is not the thread for this but I am planning to get AMD FX-6300 along with ASRock 970M PRO3 motherboard. Do you think I can use my old computer case?

No- it's definitely not legal to do what you propose in terms of licensing. (which is not to say that it won't work sometimes)

I know it is not legal. I am just wondering if it is still possible. I will be starting a Master's degree in Winter so I want to save anything I can.

We're not going to help you do anything illegal. Please read the rules.

If you and I share the same definition of piracy, what I proposed is not piracy but more of a loophole/"workaround". :)

There are dozens of old threads on similar topic in this forum. Not trying to justify my reason. If you can't help, that's cool.
