Howdy:

Any thoughts about the OPTIONAL DST rollup patch offered out-of-band today with the more urgent IE patch?

August 2015 cumulative time zone update for Windows operating systems

Regardless of whether or not one lives in a DST region (I do), I seem to recall some time ago a suggestion that it's a good idea to install such patches, because of e-commerce and other online activities that cause one to interact with web sites in other time zones.

I welcome your expert advice and input about the wisdom of installing it vs. hiding it.

Thanks much!

MM

Those DTS are not harming the system and provide "consistency of the time zone database on all systems...to maintain parity with other operating system versions".

I do always apply those for compatibility with other Microsoft OS and Server one and don't let myself invade with too much paranoid thoughts.

Hi, NoN:

LOL, I was thinking more along the lines of stability than paranoia (at least for this particular patch).
(I recall the infamous "Russian Ruble" patch that borked a few gazillion systems a while back...)

With the recent history of M$ and their Black Tuesday escapades, I tend to be rather selective, especially when it comes to "Optional" things.
"Once/Twice/Thrice burned, forever shy", or something like that.

Time-keeping would seem to be important to an OS.
Which begs the rhetorical question: since (nearly) everyone must -- at some time -- interact with a corner of the intertubes on DST, I wonder why such a patch is *only* Optional, rather than Recommended or Important??

Well, OK.
Barring worldwide viral reports of borked computers because of DST, I guess I will take the plunge.
<gulp>

Seriously, thanks!

Why is the KB4012218 considered optional? Is it because I already have the same individual updates installed or is it because they don't apply to my system? And why do they use the word Preview? Is it optional because it's not officially released yet? Like Beta software? All comments that...
