is the computer booting in Safe Mode?
if Yes then run a disk cleanup
seems to be working after a run in safe mode. thanks all, for your time.

I know this is an old thread, but what exactly did you do in safe mode? I have the exact same problem. I tried to boot in safe mode. Tried opening Windows Update, but nothing at all happened (it would not open). I seem to have found info saying that Windows Update cannot open in safe mode.

Anyway, nothing new when I rebooted again and tried to check for updates in Windows Update again. It just keeps checking and checking and checking for hours...

I've also tried the Microsoft Fix It tool, but what happens there is that it says "Checking for updates on the Internet" and is stuck there. So basically the same thing as in Windows Update...

Btw, I have just done a clean install of Windows 7 Professional x64 (SP1) on this computer, so this is the first time I run Windows Update after that (meaning no updates have ever been installed).

I am not tech savvy at all, so now I'm clueless...

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

This will most probably fix the issue:

Windows 7 Says "Checking for updates", but hangs there
