Can't use windows update - Where can I find optional updates?

Due to a problem with BITS I cannot currently download updates using Windows Update. I can download them manually and install them from the Microsoft website. Unfortunately I can only find the required updates but not any of the optional ones. Does anyone know where I can find these? Even if I search for the update number the search comes back empty. Also, if you would like to help with the BITS problem please look at my profile to find the other thread.

    Let's fix BITS instead.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

    Farbar Service Scanner Download

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

Also I think something is wrong with my permissions. I keep having to take ownership of folders to be able to run the applications inside of them. Is there a way to reset the permissions? This may be a completely separate problem but it is quite annoying.

This all sounds very much like malware -
Please download and install Malwarebytes Anti-malware (free version) from Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware Detection & Removal Software - UNtick 'Enable free trial of MBAM Premium' at the end of the installation - and update it, then run a full scan in your main account, and Quick scans in any other user accounts.

    Quarantine everything it finds
post back with the results -
Also - what Anti-Virus is installed? Avast? - what other AV was previously installed?

I have run malware bytes; it did not solve the problem. I am using Avast - the computer came with McAffee but I uninstalled it.

We need to run the uninstall cleanup tools for both McAfee and Panda...

Download the McAfee removal tool from:

    http://download.mcafee.com/products/...tches/MCPR.exe

Click Save, and save the file to a folder on your computer.
Navigate to the folder where you saved the file.
right-click on MCPR.exe and select 'Run as Administrator' to run the removal tool.

    when complete, reboot.

Now run the Panda Removal tool from the link here...
    Panda Antivirus Uninstaller Download
Download the tool, run it and then reboot.
Once rebooted, open an Elevated COmmand Prompt, and run the following commands.

    NETSH WINSOCK RESET
    NETSH WINHTTP RESET

reboot again, and try windows update.

Is there a removal tool for AVG? I may have had the antivirus installed at some time. I still use the tune-up program from AVG too if that it relevant. I am downloading the uninstallers you suggested right now.

When I run the McAffee removal tool it says some or all files could not be removed and that it is an incomplete uninstallation.

AVG's tune-up tool is the same as any other registry cleaner - dangerous!
    Their removal tool(s) is here...
AVG | Download tools and utilities

McAfee... Reboot and run the tool again. see if it works this time.
