Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, service not running

A local computer repair shop did a lot of damage to my HP Pavilion Elite with Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit. I believe they broke the windows update tool and I have tried 4 or 5 ways to fix it that haven't worked yet. I'm hoping someone else has an idea.

    Situation:
    • Run Windows Update, get an error that says "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. Try restarting your computer.
    • Restart computer, same error.
    • Check Running services, "Background Intelligent Transfer Service" service says "started."
    • Check Running services, "Windows Update" service is "Started"

    Attempted Fixes:

NET START BFE - already started
NET START BITS - started successfully
NET START WUAUSERV - already started
NET START TRUSTEDINSTALLER - successfully started

    Still can't run windows update.

Please download the Farbar Service Scanner from

    Farbar Service Scanner Download

Right-click on the saved file and select 'Run as Administrator', and tick all the options, then click on the Scan button - copy and paste the report to your response.

One of your errors tends to indicate a problem with drivers - and a couple of the drivers in the report also indicate driver problems.

Perhaps we should test whether my theory is correct...
I need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 )
    Once saved, run the tool.
Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report.

To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response.

The Windows Defender service is pointing at the wrong file.
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

    SC CONFIG WinDefend binPath= "C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k secsvcs"

Reboot, and run the Farbar tool again and post the new results.

    OK- lets try this...
This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

I tried this last night after seeing you suggested it in another thread. I just got error messages, but I will uninstall everything and retry it so that I can report where it gets stuck.

While this was running, I got a popup saying my computer needs to restart for changes to take effect. I installed and ran the Intel tool without trouble this time, and rebooted twice. This is the report now, and I will run it again after this reboot just in case something changes.
