    Welcome to our forum GingerA.

It appears that your system has a retail mother board.

Could you let us know what motherboard your system has.

Use this little tutorial by Brink to fill in your system specs.

System Info - See Your System Specs

A legal Windows 7 Pro cost around $140.00 in the U.S.A.

    Their lies the problem.

You have a after market Retail motherboard and a
    Windows License Type: COA SLP

OEM SLP keys are only good on the computer it was original activated on.
OEM SLP key is what a computer manufacture use.

    Example:
    Dell
    HP
That make your installation of this Windows 7 on your computer counterfeit.

You need to get a legal copy of Windows 7 and it's proper activation COA key.

Thanks for letting me know Bear!

Now I found the original DVD, which indeed is for distribution for new Dell PCs only. I don't own a Dell.
I bought it from a big ebay seller, so not some shady download. I paid good money for it. The Seller told me it is OK to use it on a non Dell.

Now I should have informed myself better and I understand this probably wasn't legal.

To get my PC on the right and legal track, two more questions please:

    1. what exactly do I have to look for when buying a new Win 7, to not fall in a similar trap again?
    2. Is there a way to just switch to the new Key or will I have to set up my system completely new?

Because their is no way to know what that Dell DVD installed or didn't install I recommend do a Clean Install with a proper Microsoft DVD and the proper COA key for proper activation.

I buy all my Microsoft operating system from a well established local computer store.
No games, gimmicks, tricks and no sales. You get what you pay for.

Remember a $3000.00 computer is a $3000.00 door stop without a proper operating system, activated properly.

    Windows 7/64 Pro is $140.00

    Hi,
Yea I'd report the buy from ebay asap

Look for oem/ system builders copies they're about all that's left but the price LBB posted is correct 140.us
Newegg has them so does Amazon
You can also contact the computer manufacture unless this is a custom build that is

I have a custom build PC and I am a bit confused what to look for now.

OEM - does not fit me, right?

Seems like any single copy on ebay, amazon etc. has some suffix like OEM, MAR, refurbished, systembuilder and whatnot. Even the more exspensive ones do.

MS does only sell Win 10.

Which kind of WIn 7 version will work for me?

Sorry about the tardy appearance in the thread!

I don't think there is any need to buy a new license (it wouldn't work on the current install anyhow)

To confirm that the problem is what I think it is, please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt window and post the results.

    Code:
    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\Wow6432Node\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S
    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S
    REG QUERY HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\TypeLib\{EE574957-4077-4AD6-8658-327C2C86C5AA} /S

    .
Here are some instructions to make life easier :)
    1) To open an Elevated Command Prompt Window (the ECP window), click on Start, All Programs, Accessories – then right-click on Command Prompt, and select Run as Administrator. Accept the UAC prompt.
    2) To run the commands easier, highlight the block of commands, and right-click on the highlight – select Copy. In the CP Window, click on the black/white icon at top left – select Paste. The commands will run but may not complete the last command, so hit the Enter Key once.
    3) To copy the results... click on the Black/White icon in the top left, and select Edit... 'Select All', and hit the Enter key - then use Ctrl+V or r-click+Paste to paste it into your response.
