Can't Activate a Genuine Version of Windows 7 Ultimate

Apparently, when I originally installed my legitimate version of W7 Ultimate, I did not activate it (!!???).

When I try to run Microsoft Windows activation (slui.exe), I get the infamous 'access denied' message.

So I spoke to Microsoft Technical Support for activation.

    The guy confirmed that:
    - I have a genuine product key for W7 Ultimate 64 bit
    - the product key was never activated
    - they can't help me. I have to talk with HP (the manufacturer).

So, I called HP Tech support. They told me they couldn't help, because my machine was out of warranty!

    Can you help?

    Thanks in advance..........................

Hello and welcome sammyinthesouth first up mate please -

    SYSTEM SPECS ADD IN

Can we have some system specs please as what you have posted gives us not that much (or anything at all with some folks) to work with and given there are so many manufacturers of components and configurations that do influence what goes on within any given machine and OS.
System Info - See Your System Specs

Now how many times have you tried to validate it? and if HP installed it have you contacted them?? plus if necessary phone Microsoft themselves you will need the details of the install and the code of course.
You will find the info in Control Panel > System see my pic

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
    Quite a pickle you're in,
Not sure how the activate windows timer was missed by you or how long your warrantee was for sounds like 30 days ?

I'm sure M$ tech tried to guide you through the screen shot above to use activate now on top of the Product I.D.

In any case if H-P didn't help you I would try again they might at least guide you to a software company to sell you another ultimate retail disk and key would be the least they could do I would hope :/

You'll not likely find a 7 ultimate version of windows anywhere that is legitimate it is the most pirated copy of windows.

There are still win-7 Pro versions around at Newegg/ Amazon just don't bother with anything on ebay.

I've attached an image of the page shown by "my computer - properties".

I've also attached a screen print of the report generated by Belarc Adviser, which provides much more detail.

    My Windows 7 Product ID is: 0042 6OEM 8992662-00010

    I'm in a bind:
    - I talked with Microsoft by phone. They told me my Windows product key for W7 Ultimate is legitimate, but that it was never activated.
    - I am unable to activate it myself (I get the msg "Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file......"
    - they told me to talk with HP about it, since they are not able to help me with it
    - I talked by phone with HP, who told me they cannot help since my machine is no longer under warranty
So, I'm stuck in the middle. I have a legitimate license, I have W7 running on my machine for over two years, but I can't activate it in order to qualify for the free W10 upgrade.

Is there some way you can help me?

    Thanks again

    Hi,
I would ask for extended support from H-P probably not going to happen for free though.
Weird properties page no mention at the bottom of a product i.d. or status

I don't know how a new computer activates anymore it's been 6 years since I've bought one from a manufacture
If I remember correctly they activate automatically once you turn it on and make a user account :/

I would backup All of your personal files not programs,
Also do a system image and recovery disk
    Imaging with free Macrium

Then post a disk management screen shot using this,
Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

    Hi again.

I have a system image produced through Acronis (used this successfully in the past to restore my "C" system drive), and I'm attaching a jpg of the disk management screen.

When I talked with HP, they were willing to offer me 'extended support', but the price was significantly more than a new W7 or W10 license! So it doesn't make sense to go that way.

    Chdeers.
    Sam.

A few things really stand out from your original report,

You have an OEM product ID but no SLIC table to go with it,

    Code:
    Windows Product ID: 00426-OEM-8992662-00010
    Windows Product ID Type: 2
    Windows License Type: OEM SLP
    Code:
    OEM Activation 2.0 Data-->
BIOS valid for OA 2.0: yes, but no SLIC table
    Windows marker version: N/A
    OEMID and OEMTableID Consistent: N/A
Looking at your system properties page, shows no product ID or activation area at all.

Looking up your computer it seems it was shipped with Windows 8.

So the obvious question next is where did you get your copy of Windows 7?

Did you get a product key with it?

Hi, and thanks for the reply.

    1. You are correct. The computer was shipped with Windows 8 installed (about 2 years ago). I have the original Windows 8 recovery disks set (4 CDs) and I have the W8 product key as stored in the machine's BIOS.

    2. I disliked W8 so much that I went back to the seller, who provided me with a W7 Ultimate install disk, together with the product key.

    3. I installed W7, using the product key that came with it. The installation went fine - no errors or warnings - and I've been using it since then with no problems of any kind. The system accepts all Microsoft updates that are downloaded to it.

    4. I have the W7 product key. When I talked with Microsoft by phone a few days ago, they confirmed it was a legitimate, unactivated key. I thought I had done the activation when I installed W7, but that was long enough ago that I can't say with any certainty exactly what I did during the installation.

    5. Microsoft won't help me, HP will help, but for a huge fee, and the place I bought the machine from isn't around any more.

Can you suggest any other steps I can take (short of re-installing W8 and going through hell to reinstall all my apps)?

    Thanks again for any help.
    Sam.

You're welcome. It seems that you have done everything right short of activating initially.

Something is going on with your computer, Noel, our overworked expert will need to look at this.

In the mean time can you run this,

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

    And post the outcome.

I'll point Noel over here but it may be a bit of a wait.

I ran the checker. It completed successfully and reported that some corrupt files were fixed, and asked me to reboot (I will do that shortly).

In the meantime, following is the information added to the CBS.log file in C:\windows\log\cbs:
