    Win7 activation error code 0xc004008

Windows 10 may eat you windows 7 key it did mine if using a virtual machine.

A phone call would mostly likely fix it but I am not ready for a permanent installation yet.

    Here is what I did,
Installed windows 7 retail in virtual box it activated, upgrade to windows 10 and it activated.

So, I decided I wanted to try something different. I installed windows 7 change the key but this time it gave me an error code 0xc004008 when trying to activate windows 7 in a virtual machine.

I am curious to see if windows 10 will even activate on my computer from a clean install not using a virtual machine.

    I think I over tested.

I'm thinking when you did this.

    Code:
Installed windows 7 retail in virtual box it activated, upgrade to windows 10 and it activated.
Your Windows 7 key is no longer available for use. Hopefully when you remove Windows 10 it will free up your Windows 7 key. I don't really know for sure but that is my thoughts.
I personally would not risk a perfectly good Windows 7 key getting Windows 10 free. It's not free if you waist a Windows 7 key on it.

I didn't want to confuse people that why I left that out. I thought I may have use the key one to many times. It looks like a phone call when ready will be needed. Actually, windows 7 should of activated. The reason, is the transferable rights-I know there is a considerable debate on this. People claim the key is not taken if you upgrade from 7 or 8.1 you should be able to re-install windows 7 or 8.1 and it activate without issue. Which means I was correct that windows 10 will eat your Windows 7 or 8.1 key. I am already aware that each virtual machine is a new computer. What will be interesting to see if windows 10 activates on a clean install on a physical machine not a virtual machine.

Which way should I do it?

Change the windows 7 key on a physical machine to the retail version?
If activation doesn't work, call in to Microsoft and explain I was testing with different ways to install windows 7 & 10 on a virtual machine and I messed up.

Or Should I install windows 7 retail on a virtual machine call in to Microsoft and explain I was testing with different ways to install windows 7 & 10 on a virtual machine and I messed up.

I really don't know the answer to your questions.
With all the problems I have read about people having problems going back to Windows 7 I personally wouldn't be playing games with one of my Windows 7 keys.
Of course it's your computer so you can play all you want.
When play time for Windows 10 comes to my house I will just buy it and then play.

Update. At least the clean install of windows 10 still works & gets activated on the physical machine. As far as the windows 7 retail, I haven't re-tested it on the physical machine.

Too late, you're still leaving details out...

You should be, without issue is subjective.

I'm sure if you keep playing and leaving out the details for others to assist, you'll prove that.

What exactly are you trying to do anyway?

My understanding of what is being tried by groze, but of course I could be wrong.

    1. Use a Windows 7 Retail key to up grade to Windows 10.
    2. Use the same Windows 7 Retail key to use Windows 7 on another install.
    All at the same time.

As far as I know that is using the same Windows 7 Retail key at the same time on two different installs and will not activate properly.

As long as that Windows 7 Retail key is tied up with Windows 10 upgrade it will not be available for any other install until Windows 10 is gone and releases the Windows 7 Retail key.

Come on groze give us some needed clues on what you are trying to do.

    @derekimo

I moved over to seven forum because my problem basically became a windows 7 activation issue and I saw it as a different issue. Sorry if that was wrong and sorry if I was confusing.

I like testing system. I do go overboard a little. It keeps me busy.

    Here I will try again

1 installed Xubuntu 15.04 on primary partition one
    2 installed virtual box
3 installed windows 7 on the Virtual Machine & it activated without issue
4 upgrade windows 7 on the Virtual Machine to windows 10 & it activated without issue

This is where I ran into problems.

5 remove windows 10 VM & tried a clean install and it wouldn't activate that the issue I reported over at the ten forum
6 re-installed Xubuntu 15.04 on primary partition one
    7 re-installed virtual box
8 re-installed windows 7 on the Virtual Machine & this time it didn't activate and it gave me that error code. That why I posted here.

I was basically trying to get windows 7 retail to operate in a virtual machine on Xubuntu. I thought while I was at it, I would try upgrading to 10 in a virtual machine. Now, this time all I want to do is get windows 7 retail to work in the virtual machine.

That's fine, I didn't see your TF thread, I guess you are talking about this one,

Clean install of W10 not possible in Virtual Machine. - Windows 10 Forums

That info would have helped, leaving out info and starting with a nice gotcha title isn't very helpful.

I don't mind you tinkering, nothing wrong with that.

Your title hasn't been proven yet either, not sure what you were going with there.
