Windows 7: Win7 HP SP1 Stuck at "Checking for Updates"

Win7 HP SP1 Stuck at "Checking for Updates"

Hate to beat a dead horse here but having some very similar update issues as others have recently reported.

I actually installed the base HP version. Win updates worked fine until I got to SP1. That installed fine, rebooted, but then there was (1) update indicating Win Update needed to be updated before it could continue updates (LOL). Once I did that, now it just sits there forever "Checking for Updates".

Self-troubleshooting I've done so far but to no avail:
1) CCleaner cleaned up & Disk cleanup under safe mode (new install, not much to clean up)
2) Reset Update following this instruction: Windows Update - Reset
3) System restored to the earliest restore point. But that just gets me back to "Checking for Updates".
4) Tried to manually install KB3087039 from this thread: windows 7 sp1 update stuck at "checking for updates"

I guess I will let it continue checking (been going for about 1 hr now) but wanted to see if anyone had any other suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit

Through a series of a few other remedies (including more patience on my part), I was able to get the system to update properly.

Before I start a thread, could you please be more specific on what you did?

I tried a lot of things but it still not working (I got a new error code instead of the infinite "checking updates" by disabling Windows Module Installer but it's not really helping...)

Thank you very much :)

@Lowd - Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file
