Uh oh when I tried to create the restore point I got another error:
error in the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). The was a problem while trying to contact VSS writers. Please verify that the Event System service and the VSS service are running and check for association errors in the event logs. (0x80042318)

I don't think I'm too surprised at that
This is relevant - and shouldn't hurt...
VSS Error: 0x80042318 - Failed to Create Volume Snapshot (VSS)

If it makes no difference, carry on with the replacement anyhow as we have a backup

    Great!

Any other problems showing up now? - there's still a minor problem with the WAT service remaining....

    Close all open windows.
Open an Elevated Command Prompt window, and type the following command

    wusa /uninstall /kb:971033

    and hit the Enter key
Accept the warnings/confirmations, and wait for it to complete

copy and paste the output (if any) from the command prompt window to a reply here,
    Reboot

    reinstall the update from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971033
    Reboot

run another MGADiag report, and post it.

Hmm - the error is still present.
It seems to imply that the watadminsvc.exe file isn't properly registered for some reason.
I'll have to dive into the registry and see if I can come up with a cause/effect/solution.

    Back when I can!

I'm guessing it's a lost cause? I also keep getting weird notifications about libraries not being found or registered and I was wondering if that could be linked to the Windows activation problem or is my Windows just generally f'd up..
