    CheckSUR in circular loop

    Hello,

I recently noticed I could not navigate to Add/Remove programs, select which windows features to turn on/off. The dialog turns up blank. I am also unable to uninstall certain updates etc. I researched online and ran the CheckSUR tool. I followed all the common instructions by placing missing files in the package directory etc. However, the tool seems to be caught in some sort of loop as it returns the same result every time even though it says its fixed the problem. Here is the output.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions
    and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

Sorry about the delay - been very busy at work and elsewhere

I think I may have found the problem.

Please delete the C:\Windows\Temp\CheckSur folder completely

Then run CheckSUR again and post the new CheckSUR.log file

What is weird is that it is looking for a file not present in the KB package when you expand it manually. So I have no idea what it really wants.

It wants exactly what it says:)
There are two files in the expanded package called 'update.mum' and 'update.cat'.
Rename each to 'Package_for_KB3087918~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0'.mum/cat as appropriate, and put them in the tight place, then run another CheckSUR scan and post the log

Same results. Notice it says its looking for the package name with "_SP1" in it. If I rename and put those packages in the directory then it says it can't find the none SP1 package. E.g. It says

    expected file name Package_for_KB3087918_SP1~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.mum

then you put the package in there then it says

expected file name Package_for_KB3087918~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.0.mum (notice no SP1)

and keeps looping like that. Hence the problem :)
