    WU error 0x800706f7 / Activation 0x8004fe21 ( rare ) - W7 Premium 64

Background: this is my mother's PC, running OEM W7 Home Premium 64bit. Usually it has automatic updates running and she's had it a few years without any complaints, and I give it a minor checkup when I've been in the area. For a while ( most of this year ) she's been complaining about the activation popup appearing occasionally & "something not right", and I've finally got hold of the PC to look at it.

At first it looked like a kb3004394 issue, couldn't find any trace of that installed however. Downloaded & ran kb3024777 which had no apparent effect, and then uninstalled all 3rd party AV/firewall software and tried every generic fix I could find, including a full windows update reset, MS Fixits and various other manual kb install attempts. End result, absolutely no change - windows updates all still stall, occasionally it'll claim to be installing .NET updates and then deny all knowledge of having done so later.

I'm an IT professional but not a Windows one ( I can feel the uhoh frowns already ), so at this point let's assume I haven't done anything.

I have no idea what error the activation popup is reporting - if I check activation status via system properties it always shows as activated.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Edit: just noticed all the MGADiag warnings about file mismatches: I'll look into that but I won't actually do anything to them. Also noticed it's W7 Premium rather than Pro, sorry.

Edit: Activation dialog error 0x8004fe21 - seems to pop up when I boot the PC & then not show up again.

Please follow windows-update-posting-instructions so we can help you. Be patient with SURT tool as it takes quite a while to complete sometimes :)

    Hi,

Thanks for replying. In my frustration I'd assumed DISM was the same check as kb947821, apologies; it's hard to trust something running from an installer every time when you have installer issues. I've run checksur & rerun sfc /scannow, current CBS directory contents & event logs zip linked below. I can't export event logs as .evtx, Event Viewer is claiming it's an invalid format. Be warned - cbs.log is 1.3GB.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers -

Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers
try downloading and installing them from here - https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&DwnldID=22194

    (you want the iata_enu.exe download)

Once complete, please reboot twice, then post another MGADiag report.

Hi Noel, no use as they won't install ( no surprise given there's no Intel devices on the system ). Actual error "This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software".

Edit: here's the MGADiag output - sorry for the delay, had to run

As mentioned in the OP, the PC with issues is my mother's - my own PC ( which has it's own set of problems I'm ignoring while this is going on ) has the Sabertooth motherboard. This has what's showing as an ASUS M4A78LT-M-LE board - ASUS site tells me that's a AMD 760G chipset. It's refused to let me install CPU-Z properly for some time so I've not been able to get any detailed info, it won't let the driver install.

Side note: do we change profile info for each different PC we're querying about? I can go and change it all if it'll help, but that seems like it could get confusing.

    Nah - no need...

    Try this...
Please run the following commands in an Elevated Command Prompt

    NET STOP CRYPTSVC
    REN C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CATROOT2 CATROOT2OLD
    NET START CRYPTSVC

once complete, leave the system alone for at least an hour to rebuild the database, then reboot, and run another MGADiag report and post the results.

I've never learned to read the dberr.txt file yet - and I reckon I'm too old now - but there are what appear to be signs of permission problems there, and perhaps other things as well.

    Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
    Save the file as Appevt.evtx
    Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.
