KB982670 .Net Framework 4 Client Profile update fails to install

KB982670 .NET Framework 4 Client Profile update keeps failing to install. The registry only shows versions 2, 3 and 3.5 but not 4. Is this why the update keeps failing? And if I don't have version 4, why does KB982670 keep trying to install?

PS - Do I need version 4, and if so, what else do I need to install to get this update to install? Any help really appreciated.

I'm not sure if you need .NET4.

You can try to skip to version 4.5.2:
Download Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 (Offline Installer) for Windows Vista SP2, Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2008 SP2, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2012 R2 from Official Microsoft Down

Version 4.6 has been out for a while now, but I have not seen it being pushed via Windows Update yet... so, I'll stick to suggesting 4.5.2 for situations like yours.

If version 4.5.2 fails to install, then please follow these posting instructions:

Thanks a lot UsernameIssues for your very informed reply. I've got no idea what the most recent version is. I've only started monitoring Windows updates more closely since I upgraded from Vista recently. I'll try and install 4.5.2 and report back with logs if I have any issues.

Edit: I tried to install 4.5.2 but it didn't seem to like it and said it was corrupted and repaired and installed it successfully. I've checked in the registry on what versions I now have and it says 4.0, not 4.5.2, so I guess the repairing involved reverting from 4.5.2 to 4.0. If you think that's OK then I'll mark this as solved.

Where in the registry are you checking?

Is .NET 4.5.2 listed in Programs and Features as one of the apps installed on the computer?

I was looking in HKLM/software/Microsoft/Netframework setup/NDP. If I click on v4 then client it actually does show 4.5.51209. I've now looked in Programs and Features and 4.5.2 is showing there so I guess it must have installed OK.

I've marked this solved but if I have any problems I'll report back. Thanks again for your help - really appreciated.

I have the same stuff in the registry and 4.5.2 in Programs and Features.

    Weird.

4.5.2 is an update of 4.0
4.0 is an upgrade of 3.5 (which came with Windows 7)
The whole .NET thing is a bit of a mess
I've recently seen 4.6 being touted as the latest version for Win7 (but I haven't see it for myself anywhere yet - possibly due to lack of time for the hunting)

4.5.x is necessary for some graphics cards/drivers - but there's not a lot of other applications that actually require it.
