Windows 7 Says "Checking for updates", but hangs there

    Hello,

I've looked everywhere online trying to figure out how to fix this problem all day with windows being halted at "checking for updates"

I've tried downloading Microsoft fix it, and other windows update troubleshooters.

Are there any methods to fix this? How long does it take for it to bypass the checking?

I've waited about 30 minutes to an hour and still nothing.

    Thanks in advance.

Hi logo897 & welcome to the forum.
Updates are taking an extremely long time.
Set power options to sleep never, run windows update.
Updates are taking up to 24-48 hours.
Forum member I assisted with this issue stated it took her machine 7 hours.
    Be patient it will complete.
    Patience is a virtue!

Last few months as far as we can tell!

Just did repair install win 7 Home Premium w/sp1. Took several hours (6) for updates to start downloading. Over 200 since SP1.

I set power options to sleep never. Started updates and waited.

    See

Windows update not working, hangs while "searching for updates"

The usual error is, that Microsoft changes update server IP addresses from time to time. It takes several hours or even days until all DNS servers around the world are updated. Until then the Manual update checks for new updates without any result. (Surprisingly when you switch the windows update to Automatic, it will find the updates, but the manual will not)

It may be even true, that some internet providers blacklist Windows Update servers during some days or hours, to lower the network bandwidth.

When you set the DNS servers in your internet connection properties to Google (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) it will work immediately, since Google DNS servers are usually updated at the very first place.

I've spent 2 days reinstalling Win 7 thinking the update does not work until I've found what's wrong :-D
