I may sleep easy tonight alpha, thanks for that ending on positive note. Can I assume that flashing with the latest official BIOS needs to be done as soon as:
- the factory install media has arrived
- I have wiped the drive ready for install
...and that I don't need to be inside Windows to flash the bios? Because I am thinking that as soon as I do so, it may corrupt the current windows installation which thinks it is an HP installation, then when I update the bios, the keys don't match anymore and (HP) windows won't boot up, but that's ok, because I have my Acer recovery disk and, sorry a bit garbled, in essence, will I update the bios from within the current installation or wipe the drive first and do it from the DOS prompt or within the bios itself. Need to hit the hay soon, but trying to get this stuff clear in my head. Thanks guys, you're the bomb.

Yes, you should be able to flash the BIOS from the BIOS. Just read the instructions at least twice, and print them out if you can. And yes, restoring the official SLIC table will break the current OEM-SLP activation. The certificate won't match the SLIC table anymore.

From what I see from the log; someone has installed a H.P. Product I.D. on a Acer laptop.

That is the reason for these in the log.

Buy a proper Windows 7 Microsoft DVD with the proper COA key and Clean Install Windows 7.
You say you bought the laptop in Asia. Asia is a big place and many countries.
From what I can find out the laptop came with Windows 8 which means anybody who installed Windows 7 needed to put the Windows 7 sticker on the laptop and didn't. Counterfeiters don't do the sticker thing.
Windows 7 Ultimate is getting very hard to find from a known legal seller.
Cost about $250.00 for OEM.
Windows 7 Pro $140.00 OEM
Home Premium $100.00 OEM
Slim chance of finding Retail version on any of them.

Asia sure is a big place, I was in Thailand at the time, that's where I bought it. Now you mention Windows 8, it's quite possible that it came with Windows 8 and that I didn't want it and asked the store if I could have Windows 7 instead, and of course, they agreed. Only, I wasn't to know that it would be a counterfeit installation of Win 7, had I known, I would have opted for the genuine Windows 8. I don't even blame them, they were making a sale. Either way, doesn't seem to be a sticker anywhere, though I haven't checked inside the battery case yet. From what I understand, some laptops aren't supplied with stickers anymore so I was wondering if this would be one of them. That would make sense to me in these days of OEM-SLP installations with the automatic activation, where I seldom need to know the product key, if at all, do I?
So if I had paid for the laptop with Windows 8 instead of Windows 7, then I wouldn't be in this situation. I assume that the girl at Acer Support who wanted to supply me the recovery install disk didn't much care that the current installation is Windows 7, but while I think of it, on the Acer drivers download page, you can download drivers for the E1-571 laptop for Windows 7. So, whilst both Layback and Torchwood picked up on the usual Windows 8 installation, I assume I wouldn't be able to download Windows 7 drivers if it never shipped anywhere with Windows 7, unless the Windows 7 drivers are for customers who downgrade.
In any case, at the time, I paid for a laptop which included Windows, and I preferred 7 over 8. The girl at Acer seems glad to sell me the recovery disk. If I update with the latest official BIOS and I can install from the recovery disk, I will be satisfied.

Run showkey on it, Solved Showkey - Windows 10 Forums It will tell you if there is a Windows 8/8.1 OEM key or not. As far as I know it is stored in a section of the BIOS that is not affected by a BIOS flash/upgrade. Totally separate from the SLIC table. In fact I do believe you can have an OEM embedded key even if there is no SLIC table. The SLIC table is only required for Windows 7 and earlier. Which may be why you have the counterfeit BIOS. It never had a SLIC table from the factory.

What do you think? Does this mean that some of these laptops 'did' ship with Win 7 (i.e. this one amongst others) or is the 'Windows 7 OEM marker present in firmware' a reference to the HP installation?
