Do a clean install with original W7 disk. Activate, go to and select upgrade in programs menu, enter your upgrade code, reboot and done. Worked for me a month ago.
    Art.
As an afterthought I cleaned with Diskpart first.

Thanks. Was hoping not to do this but looks like I have no option.

Did you try the registry workaround from post #10 ? interested to know if it would work or what the outcome would be in your scenario

Have a look at option 3 here - Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version gives you the registry edit workaround for your exact problem

May or may not work as you already have a dodgy slic installed ???
    Hi Pauly,

I could not do that as the Ultimate version was acquired through Windows Anytime Update. Therefore I do not have media for the upgrade version - only the original prior to the upgrade. And that product key does not work on the new install.

I may just purchase Win 10 and do a clean install with that rather than mess around with multiple installs and then update to Win 10 anyway.

Yes I did. Message received was that the key is only valid for an upgrade not clean install. Even though the registry value for ...CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/MediaBootInstall still has a value of zero.

Have also tried the original key and that was not valid on the version installed.

So I have 2 product keys that I have purchased and neither work on this install that was done by the repair shop.

Don't even look for any kind of Windows 7 keys by themselves.

This is from our expert Noel.

Can buy Windows key without media.

    Seems good... Thanks!

There are NO legal sales of Keys for Windows other than with accompanying software - if you buy from this shop it will almost certainly turn out to be a counterfeit copy. Most such sales will work for a limited period, until the number of activations exceeds the limit, at which time MS will Block the Key from further activations and all current installs will become flagged as non-genuine.
If you've already made a purchase and installed the product I recommend that you visit the Windows 7 Genuine forum and read the Announcements and stickies there - and post an MGADiag report to have the key checked.

Layback Bear, that is what I have found - no legit copies for sale. All are from PC's that have been allegedly "decommissioned". As I want to keep my copy being Genuine, I have no option on this one. Upgarde to Win 10 and pay the price.

Have been taught a lesson about PC repairs though. Do not trust the repair guy. I should have purchased a new disk and installed all myself. An expensive lesson!

    Thanks

I think we are missing a trick here, its only your Ultimate upgrade you are having a problem with - theres nothing to stop you clean installing your original Win 7 version and activating with your original key

If this works ok you can then take the free upgrade route to win 10 currently on offer from MS - the only draw back will be that Ultimate would have upgraded to Win 10 Pro but lower copies of 7 upgrade to Win 10 Home
