Windows Updates showing never been updated message

Please can someone offer some help and assistance? As the title says, I'm having an issue with Windows Update for Windows 7, 64-Bit Home Premium Edition. Basically, this is my Dad's laptop which he mentioned to me that he was having an issue when trying to Shutdown the laptop - that it was constantly showing an update and take an absolute age to close down. I ran an aanti-virus, which came out clear

I did a little research on the web and found that for the hanging update, some guidance to stop update in the in services.msc and to delete 'Software Distribution' folder and deleted it, and then restarted the service for the folder to be replicated. So I expected to see check for updates and updates to installed to say 'Never'. However this was a couple of weeks back and my PC running on Windows 8.1 had received an update in between, so I expected the laptop to have also received one too. I spoke to my Dad said his browser (Internet Explorer 8), was requesting a update for various sites. This is when I went back to take a look on to the Windows Update screens both messages, still saying 'Never'.

When trying to download the browser, getting messages saying from Microsoft site saying some SP's and such is missing and when I have tried to manually make the Windows Update check for updates it just sits there checking for updates for hours and hours until you end up powering down the laptop. My question would be how remedy this or reverse this - so to carry on with updates periodically, as necessary and to update the browser too? Or is there a known fix? I have a tried Knowledge Base - KB3102810, that is suppose to help with slow updates, but still showing the same message. Apologies for the long message, I just wanted to make sure, I could give as much detail as necessary

Also, services.msc for Windows 7, what is the default Startuptype setting for Windows updates? so, far it has been set to 'Automatic' and still is.

    Thanks

    updates

Still on IE8, definately means 200+ updates (including update to IE11).
Also from what you said hes still on W7 not W7 SP1.

Any chance you/he can run the MXdiag tool from here, and post the results
Windows Genuine and Activation Issue Posting Instructions

Also would be handy to know what his Make/model of comp is and any AntiVirus .

If you had left the laptop alone, it probably would have eventually found a list of updates that were missing. It might take 24 to 48 hours. This long search time seems to be due to recent changes to the Windows Update servers. Manually download and install KB3112343 on the laptop. That should reduce the time that it takes for Windows Update to search for a list of updates.

The WU service should be Automatic (delayed):

Once you get WU working as desired, you can let it install IE11.

    Hi 70816,

That MXdiag looks fine apart from its showing an SSD, i believe that comp only came with a standard HDD.

If it was changed then that why its causing a problem.

    Please perform the following

run WUA from the link below
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3112343

    REBOOT

    run slmgr.vbs /ato (windows Orb> search > run)

I have gone for the 64-bit one, this is what is running on the laptop; Download Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB3112343) from Official Microsoft Download Center. With it being a 24 to 48 hour run, will probably start it tomorow morning and keep it running. Could do with it being a 24 hour run, as I can't stand it when you see 'Searching For Updates' going over the screen, least with a PC can just turn the monitor off. I would never be sure of leaving of this laptop, :). I checked the services.msc too and it's set to automatic (delayed). Will keep you posted.

That is correct on a few reporting tools, I have ran in the past its showed up as an SSD, when in fact it's just the standard HDD pre-installed and has never been removed nor has the laptop casing ever been opened. It is strange, the only other hdd it has seen is an external one I use (Maxtor) but then I guess would not seem to explain it why it's being picked up as SSD inside. I just too a look at the Device Manager and Disk Drives and its showing as an Hitachi one.

    Hi,
The things I usually do if I get the retched never checked for updates deal is shut down and either unplug the unit from power outlet or remover the battery,
Then hold down the power button for at least a minute to drain any power out.
Leave it sit for another 5 minutes or over night if you want and try again the next day.

Then power up and recheck for updates
Let it sit for 30 minutes checking for updates and do a restart unless it shows loading or installing updates that is

If restarted go back and repeat
Usually after restarting windows kicks in comes up with some updates to install.
