You might need them; that's why. Maybe you will be writing a report (in English) that includes pricing with those symbols. Do you to expect MS to guess how you use your computer?

The trouble with this sort of thing is that MS has a tendency to re-issue such updates as optional for a couple of times, then they suddenly appear as important with the result that they get installed by those who stick to automatic updating. Meanwhile it just adds another layer of frustration to those other users who keep having to research and hide the dratted things! I know it's easy to hide updates, but I never do so without first checking the "more information" prompt in order to make a reasoned decision, and that's a complete waste of my time if I've already checked it out and made my decision not to install it.

The optional status is used before some updates become recommended. It is not a declaration of user interest level.

The first version of this update created problem for some users of Crystal Reports PDF creation. I do not know if the patch was flawed or if Crystal Reports was poorly coded. At any rate, MS opted to re-issue this update so that it did not bother some users of Crystal Reports.

I don't see it as "madness" to re-issue this update - given the Crystal Reports problem. That said, font updates are hard to get right. This version of this update might be interacting with Office (Outlook) 2010 in unexpected ways. However, we are not seeing any issues with this version of this update and it has been installed on company computers all over the world. We primarily use Office (Outlook) 2010.

I had looked for an explanation in the KB article but didn't find this--maybe I was looking at a cached (older) webpage for this KB.

But I believe you: thanks for clarifying! Perhaps the OP will come back some day, patiently wade-through all of the flack, and will stop worrying (and relating every update to the "W10 conspiracy")!
