wben353, on Jan 31, Feb 1 & 9, I installed dozens of update files. Most had failed in the Windows Update delivery system multiple times and I installed them one at a time from the list, or even stand alone .exe's, very often with a reboot after each install. Definitely a very messy period when things were not as they should have been.

My oldest restore point is Feb 14, other than an image which is years old. So, restore will be of no help.

    Built-in Administrator Account

    wben353, I had this bookmarked:
Built-in Administrator Account - Enable or Disable

Is there anything appropriate in it?

    This is over my head.

I don't believe so. As to the unknown account
Apparently, at a prior time, you changed or deleted data in your user profiles. Googling the issue provides some insight. There was a recommendation for creating an additional administrative account with admin privileges & deleting the old (corrupt) account. The explanation(s) however, were less than complete, & again, I'm not an expert.
If I were you, I'd give NoelDP a shout via PM (Private Message) Brilliant fellow & persistent as well.

Here a link to tutorial by Brink on adding accounts guest or administrative. click here
You might try creating another administrative account & trying it to see if you have admin priv from there. Couldn't hurt. If it works for you then your original administrative account profile is corrupt.

Thanks for the referral, wben353. I am going off-line for a few days in order to look in on my elderly Mother. Upon my return, I will contact NoelDP.

Regarding the unknown account, I believe that appeared during the period of upheaval and is not the result of anything that I knowingly did. I have continued to wonder if I was hacked during that period, or if I just fell victim to flying registry parts. As I mentioned, I have done a lot of scrubbing.

Thank you for shepherding me through this.

Your WD hard drive issue. Did you check to see if it was reset to offline? It's happened to me before.
Why is my external hard drive recognized, but not shown under My Computer?

To backup your outlook, you can upload your outlook data to M$ OneDrive

    1) Right-click on “My Computer” then Click on “Manage”
    2) Double-click “Disk Management” You will probably see WD Disk
    3) Right-click in the left portion of that drive box WD Disk
    4) Click “Initialize” and “OK” in the next dialog box. Wait few seconds and it should now say “Online” in the box.
    5) If there is no assigned drive letter, right click on the big space of your WD hard drive then choose Assign drive letter or Change Driver Letter and Path

Thanks again wben353. I will look more closely at WD HD upon my return. A quick check did not find the initialize option that you mentioned. The MS update took my pre-installed mirror application back to generic and then I lost communication. This could be another symptom of loss of administrative privilege. Or, I may just need to reinstall the specific software from the CD portion of the HD. I suspect the former, followed by the latter. I will have some reading to do.

If this all is not the result of a malicious attack, it sure is a good substitute. But, otherwise, the computer performs well in its current state. This has been prolonged, frustrating and tiring.

I do rent some cloud space. I should stick a .pst in it. Thanks for the idea.

Does the WD hdd appear in disk management? If it does, does it indicate "offline", "online" or other? If you right-click the left portion of the WD drive there should be an option either "initialize" or as mine indicated "online".

Thought of this last night, you can do repair of MS Office. Here's a good link to MS Outlook repair
    & MS Office 2003 repair

wben353, I have returned to my computer and am attempting to reacquaint myself with all of the helpful content within this thread. I did send a PM to NoelDP to enquire if he would take a glance at my dilemma as well. I believe that he is located several time zones away from me, and I will continue to assess individually the suggestions that have been offered to me. In the case of your question about disk management, I have captured a snapshot:
    Repeated IE 11 Install Failures-disk-management.jpg

Indeed, Disk Management indicates that the Western Digital My Book at position I is online and healthy.

However, perhaps a bigger question for me, is who is using the 39MB of currently unoccupied space showing at the top of the listed drives under Volume? Lord Voldemort?

Is there more analysis to be done with Disk Management?
