Is there an actual fix to the 80070002 update error?

I've tried the Microsoft fixes, browsed here and at Microsoft, had 2 Microsoft techs take over my computer, and still no good. I had another drive and clean installed Win 7 SP 1, same problem. I checked for viruses, Avast and Malwarebytes, nothing found.

My PC is a homebrew, Gigabyte GA-B85-HD3, Intel Pentium G3258, not OC'd, 16 Mb PNY PC3-28000 RAM. My software is legit.

Originally my problems started with shutting down my PC before going to work and seeing updates are installing, do not shut off machine. I'd get home and see the same message. I'd restart using the resset button and maybe that's what originally through things off if it was hanging. It was still connected to the internet, always is unless I shut down the machine.

As I said I've tried Microsoft fixes but my problem is obviously in the registry, why it would be in my new install in my other drive I have no idea. I'm at a loss and not a software geek, though I can roam around in the system when I have an idea what to look for.

    Any ideas?

I'm working on it. I can't get SFC/SCANNOW to work and am trying different things. Yes my services are running and now I'm trying to get HOTFIX to install ,though I have tried that in the past. That is what tries to install when I run the Update readiness tool. Even that is hanging up now. And, does it just install somewhere like a normal update or that something I'm supposed to run. I'm kinda flabbergasted and frustrated at all this since even with a clean install on a different drive I can't get updates.

That link is not the system update readiness tool.
And as you said in your first post i did a hard shutdown while updates were configuring, is not a god idea and does cause this type of prob.
what was the error message from the sfc failure
i'll be back tomorrow midnight here.

I didn't do a hard shutdown but let the update install. The link I clicked is where I got the update tool and it just wanted to install hotfix, that was the only update it installed, or told me it was installing and it did complete. KB 847921
