RE: Windows Update checking for updates forever
Original thread: /windows-updates-activation/393818-windows-update-checking-updates-forever.html
Since my original thread was closed based on an ASSUMPTION, I just wanted to post the solution:
FYI: Windows licenses are not bound to HW and I have a perfectly legal (spare) Ultimate license to use, so I was in my right to install Win 7 Ultimate onto the laptop which came with a Win 7 Pro license. (Even if I didn't have a license, Win 7 allows a 30 day trial after installation, before I need to activate it!)
Thanks, @Callender and @Barman58 for immediately assuming piracy and closing the thread before I could react...
The solution for the mentioned problem seems to have been to do the steps listed in KB971058 manually (stopping the services, removing the SoftwareDistribution cache, re-registering the DLLs, etc.). After that the update check found some 100+ important updates and installed everything.
I hope I could help somebody else with this solution.
