Windows Activation / Update problem on older computer

    Hello All.

I am writing about a windows activation / update problem that has developed on my wife's computer. I started noticing the activation notices several months ago but am just now getting around to dealing with them. Simultaneously it seems, the windows update process stopped working as well. This system has been running fat, dumb, and happy for a number of years without major issues. So I find myself here and hoping that someone can help me.

I have run MalwareBytes, SuperAntiVirus, and Norton Internet security trying to find any indication of some type of infection. All came up with nothing other than some tracking cookies. I have also used Norton Utilities to scan for registry errors and it found some items which I allowed it to correct. But the end result is that I still have the problem.

My wife usually uses this system and I am rarely on it unless there is a problem. The default browser is Chrome. It is an older Dell system running a Core2 Duo 32 bit processor. Works fine for her and what she needs. Also, I have the hard drives running in a RAID 1 configuration using the motherboard's Intel RAID manager. About 1/2 of the disk space is unused and 4 GB Ram (3 usable obviously) on this system. Also, if it is relevant, this system started life as an XP system that I did a clean install on several years ago to get it to Win 7.

Anytime I try running Windows Update / Check for updates, it tells me that it is not running. I have gone through several threads on this site to ensure that the processes are running but nothing seems to make it work. I have also renamed the %windir%/SystemDistribution folders so that WU would recreate them but that didn't fix anything either.

In the lower left corner of the "Windows Activation Screen" stating that this version of Windows is not valid, there is a code "0x80004fe21" if that is helpful / useful.

I tried running the SURT process but got "Installer encountered an error - 0xc8000247" with an "Ok" option. Selecting that simply cancelled the process.

    Here are the MGADiag results:

Thanks for the suggestion. It appears that I am running the latest driver that is available for the OS/hardware combination that I have. There is nothing that I can update unfortunately.

Right there are two things that I can suggest and I would do if it were me. First back up all of the data you need to keep onto whatever media you like and then I would try a system restore until before the issue began - I am assuming the system was running ok at some stage.

If nothing came out of that I would try this Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10 you will need to make a bootable disk and set the BIOS to boot from it (or a stick) it runs in an environment that does not use Windows so is independent of it.

If that scan comes up with nothing then it looks like an install from your original media disk either complete or a repair one see Repair Install

    Do this first

    Hi TXBlackbird

You have a bad set of intel drivers, update from the link below use the ENU set. (4th bluebox)
    https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...&DwnldID=22194

then rerun the Mxdiag all those tampered files should be gone.
If so Pick the earliest update only and try that. Does it work.

I think we are on the right track with that link Torchwood. WU is currently running but hasn't returned any results yet. But, still, this is progress. I will update the status once it completes.

ICIT2LOL - You were on the right track too, I just didn't notice that this link would work on my system. So my bad...

Here are the new Mxdiag results:

    Cool,
Updating is rather slow on W7, at the moment.

If the 1 you chose works, go for broke and D/L the rest, LEAVE it for HOURS.

    That new report looks good.

Ok mate just bE very careful with your update settings - set them to let you choose what to download and onstall and watch out for KB3035533 see pic

If I were you and you don't wnat to be plagued with 10 crap install this Ultimate Outsider - Software Downloads and run it see pic and install the disable batch file from this if you don't want 10
Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums

I would install that batch file and run it before anything else - a lot of nonsesnse going on at the moment with 10.

Thanks for the tip. Yes, I have always set my WU to download but let me select what to install. And I do have the GWX tool already installed on all my systems. Great utility.

Yep well I now install the disable batch file whenever I install now first up because on another thread they are saying that 7 support is going to end in 2018 instead of 2020 and that there might be worse to come.

Edit see this BROADWELL E is Around the Corner and I am Concerned
