Updates don't get installed during shutdown. Something is stuck.

For several weeks every time I shutdown W7 with the start menu, the update icon is shown ("installs updates, then shuts down your computer".) But the computer shuts down immediately. This repeats every time.

    What could be happening?

    Hello Stan,

Do you have updates available to install in Windows Updates when you manually check?

    1 important update:
Microsoft .net framework 4.6.1 for Windows 7 for x64.

    7 Optional

The settings are [Install updates automatically]
    [Every day]

If you manually install all the updates, does this continue?

I checked the important update and [OK]
    It created restore point
    restarted
Manually, .net framework 4.6.1 was installed. The Optionals were not. After a few minutes the update icon appeared again in the shutdown button.

In settings, -- "give me recommended updates the same way ..." is/has been checked.
Isn't "recommended" the same as "optional"?

You could keep trying to install the updates until they finish.

In addition, the tutorial below will disable the Install Updates and Shut Down shield. :)

After taking time out for supper three more important updates were available. I installed the three plus the seven optional.

Shortly after restarting, the update icon appeared in the shutdown button. But in checking for new updates, "there are no updates available for your computer."

I shut it down again and restarted. After 2.5 minutes the update icon appeared on the shutdown button again -- but still, no updates are available.

If you like, you could disable having the update icon appear on the shutdown button.

The update icon doesn't bother me, but as it doesn't work as intended, I suspect that is caused by something else being wrong.

If there are still no updates available in Windows Update, then you could see if using OPTION THREE in the tutorial below to completely reset Windows Update may help.
