    Clean install doesn't update?

Just received MS cert refurbished Lenovo 530--

First time running Windows update, just sits w/'Checking for updates' and times out after an hour or so with attached error.

Tried renaming \Windows\SoftwareDistribution per Google search--no change.

At this point it's simpler to reinstall from recovery partition than test a lot of possibilities absent a probable solution--unless for some weird reason I'm going to run into the same problem.

    That's why I'm here.

    You suggest...?

    Hello Mark, :)

You might see if doing OPTION THREE in the tutorial below to completely reset Windows Update may help.

    Windows Update - Reset

If you have a 3rd party firewall program installed, double check to make sure it's not blocking Windows Update.

    The batch didn't help.

Fixit found an update problem it couldn't fix: windows update error 0x80070003(2016-04-14-T-06_29_04A

    No hits from Google?

The machine has a trial of Norton Security. I suspended the firewall--no diff

First off, and what I should have initially said: 'and so we meet again ' Your link had a link for other stuff. I downloaded the System Update Readiness tool: Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64. After ~25 minutes searching for 'non-existent' updates, it decided that I needed a hotfix k whatever. After it completed the hotfix install I rebooted despite not being asked. I ran update and it found 226 updates for which the updater now says it's downloading. Not wishing to jinx the current, tenuous situation, I'll comment on success/failure when I see the updater commence installing and particulary once I see the first round of updates successfully installed.

I'll let you know what happens--

    Mark

Run through these instructions again see if it gives it a kick in the pants.

    1. reboot the system.

    2. Make sure you have the latest Net framework 4.6.1 installed - download and install it manually selecting repair if it is already installed.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=49982

    3. reboot

    4. Ensure you have the most recent update client - download and install it manually
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3138612

    5. Reboot

    6. Ensure the windows update service, Bits service and the Cryptographic service to automatic and started.

    7. run windows update.

    8. just wait.... some people on here have reported that the process took several hours.

Note the .net and the new windows update client may take a bit of time to install.

That error is one of the most common ones i deal with,
Your comp is probably licenced but not properly validated, dont be suprised if the updates reverse.

Then how do I go about correcting/confirming the OS validation? I'm thinking the easiest way might be to call MS help.

    Roy,

    2 points:

    1. The first round of updates completed and did not reverse. Updater then advised of 20+ more updates which I downloaded and installed and no reverse.

    2. Viewing System/Windows activation:
    'Windows is activated'
    Product ID:...........

So can I presume from the preceding that the OS is validated?
