No need as youve scanned with both since this occured, i checked on your specs thats why i suggested them.

Will check on the access denied, you should have these rights, see screenshot

    Hi Roy,

I've attached a screenshot of what the permissions are for the CBS FOLDER on my computer (like what you included in your post).
I also note that after clicking on the "Properties" of the folder & looking at the [GENERAL] tab page, it shows the folder as being "Read-only". Don't know if that makes any difference, but figured I'd mention it anyway.

WU is currently showing 15 Important updates available. I still cannot get them to download and install, though. This is becoming increasingly frustrating.

Time to hit the sack & get a some "ZZzzzz's" for a few hours.

Morning Roy and anyone else interested,

Windows Update managed to install a few updates last night at the time I shut down the computer. When I turned-on the machine earlier this morning, WU said there were 13 Important updates available. I clicked on the button to download and install them. Underneath the 'progress bar', it displayed something like, "downloading 1 of 13 updates".

It remained this way for around 45 minutes, at which time I had to go to the store for some things. When I returned about 30 minutes later, it appeared the updates had been installed. (I checked in the Control Panel > Windows Updates and it said there were no updates available). However, in looking at the update history, I do still see where some updates failed. I'm not so sure all the 'Patch Tuesday' updates were actually installed, or the update problem I've been having has been fixed.

[EDIT @ 10:35 a.m.]: I just now got an alert that there are 11 Important updates available. So, it appears the update problem has still not been resolved. (Screenshot of the updates is attached.) I really need some help with this situation. From past experience, I know if I do not install the updates, the CPU and physical memory usage will continue to be higher than normal.

I ran another sfc /scannow from the Command Prompt, and it did not report any issues.

A problem I'm having now is that despite having done 2 restarts of the computer, the Task Manager keeps showing the CPU usage hovering constantly in the 50% range with intermittent higher spikes, and the 'physical memory' usage is in the low 30 GB range. Normally, after booting, logging-in, and waiting for 10 - 15 minutes, the CPU usage levels out to 0 - 4% range, and the physical memory usage levels out to between 22% - 24% range. (This is while being OFFLINE).

I have no idea why this is happening. Given the WU problems I've reported here, I'm wondering if there is a connection between the two.
(I've attached a screenshot of a portion of what is shown when I run Process Explorer). The line shown in blue seems to be hogging the CPU.

Being I'm simply not techie-enough to understand this stuff, I'm hoping someone can make sense of it all, and help me to resolve the problem.

Thanks very much for your time and any help!

    Hi,
Yea svchost is a popular process
It pretty much searches for updates shortly after startup and can be pretty tough to say how long it will run for,

The newest work around for May is to see if these 2 are installed
First update to manually install if it's not already is KB3145739
    https://technet.microsoft.com/librar...or=-2147217396

    32 bit download,
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=51857

    64 bit download,
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=51853

After that then this one KB3153199
    https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS16-062

    32 bit download
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=52214

    64 bit download
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/down....aspx?id=52232

As always it helps if you switch your update settings to Never check for updates first
Then switch back after the install and manually check for updates and the rest should appear shortly.

Much obliged for the info and help, TZ!

Of the 2 updates you mentioned, only the KB3153199 needed to be installed, which I was able to do successfully.

I did as you said and changed the WU settings to never check for updates. I also did a restart (before doing the update you mentioned) and noticed that my computer's CPU and physical memory have returned to their usual, normal range!

You said I should change the settings back after completing the update, to what I had before (i.e. Notify me of updates, but let me decide when/if to download and install), and then manually check for remaining updates.

Question: How do I manually check for updates?

The only way I know how to check is in the Control Panel > Windows Updates..and clicking on the "check for updates" link there. I'll wait to hear back from you before I change the WU settings back.

Thanks very much again for all the help both you and Roy have provided!

    Hi,
On the top left of the updates window you'll see a listing to Check for updates.

    Greetings again, TZ,

After changing the WU settings back to what they were before, I then did the update. (There were something like 10 or 11 Important updates to be installed). All but 1 update installed successfully and the computer restarted. The update that initially failed to install was: KB3153171. (It was something like 20 MB in size).

I went back to the WU page and clicked on the download/install button. This time, the update installed, and computer restarted again.
Things appear to be back to normal on this machine now...CPU & physical memory settled down to their normal levels about 25 minutes after the 2nd restart.
Hopefully, this situation won't occur again.

I'll definitely go back to waiting several days before downloading/installing any future updates...just to make sure their aren't any issues being reported with them.

My MOST grateful thanks to you and Roy for all the help!

    Hi,
    Great news,
I would reset windows updates with option 3 here
    Windows Update - Reset

It will cause a little more pain so do it when you can let the computer sit and check for updates for a while
It should cleanup any corruption and get everything back to normal and also bring up any missed Important updates that failed too.

After and also before start making system images
It's way to easy now days and can save a lot of time undoing stuff like failed or stalled updates

Thanks very much for the additional follow-up info, TZ!

I downloaded that program shown in option #3 you referred to, and will run it either later this evening or first thing tomorrow morning. (It's too close right now to when my regularly scheduled AV & anti-malware scans will run & I normally stay off-line until after they've finished).

On the system imaging recommendation......ironically, I just happened to have purchased the latest stable release of Macrium Reflect a few months ago, and make full system backup images at least once a week. I'll also do a full backup any time there has been a significant update/upgrade/settings change(s) to any of the applications on my computer. I have MR set to retain 10 full backups, and to perform the 'purge' after the image backup has completed.

I do the backups manually, rather than on a preset schedule...mainly because I tend to forget things.
I'd likely forget to connect the 1 TB external Western Digital My Passport HDD that I use to store the full backups on, when it was time to do the image backup. (Doing the full system images is easiest for me, as those incremental and differential image backups would necessitate having to leave the external HD connected all the time).

(I seem to recall seeing something in the sub-forums here, where it's recommended to not leave external drives always connected to the computer).
Also, I did create that 'Rescue/boot application' on a USB flash drive in case malware prevents this computer from being able to boot-up. Identical backups of all my personal files/folders, etc on the internal HDD are stored on 2 separate USB flash drives.

Much obliged again for all your help! :)

    Hi,
Yea I'd make both a cd and flash drive recovery media just in case

I was also going to get the paid for version of reflect eventually just because it's great
But yes indeed a disconnected external drive with images on it is a safer one.

I don't or wouldn't use incremental.. either full is best I really don't mind the extra time or disk space it uses :)
