    OK, thanks, I will.

At the bottom of that microsoft page it says:

After you rebuild the Tokens.dat file, you must reinstall your product key by using one of the following methods:
    • At the same elevated prompt command, type the following command, and then press Enter: cscript.exe %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk <product key>

Do I type in the < before the product key and the > after it? Or do I just type in the product key without the < and >?

Sorry, I'm new to the command prompt.

I did a search and it looks like I type in the key without the < and >.

Also, I found some elevated commands for Windows that I could practice on, since I'm inexperienced with it:

To see if Windows is licensed,

    slmgr.vbs /dli

    Results - "License Status: Licensed"

To see when the license expires,

    slmgr.vbs /xpr

Results - "Windows 7 Professional Edition: The machine is permanently activated."

So if it's licensed and permanently activated, I'm wondering what the problem is.

And where is slmgr.vbs getting this information?

Does the above posted Mgadiag show that my Windows is permanently activated?

    Hi Roy,

I haven't run your Recreate the Licensing Store yet because I'm concerned that my (supposedly) new Dell came without a COA Activation Key.

The only key I have is the OEM Dell key that I found with Belarc Advisor and several other programs listed on this site and which the Mgadiag partially shows.

Since rebuilding the tokens.dat file includes typing in the activation key, will it accept the Dell OEM key?

    Thanks again for your help.

    Hi JJ,
That Mgadiag looks good to go, Licenced and activated
All the required fields are there, and NO errors or mismatches are showing.

The proof of the pudding, (what a great saying),
select >> 1 << update to install, not a netframework one.

If it installs, then as i first posted, a refurbed comp, and genuine.
No further action required apart from, now create a system image using Macrium or Acronis, this will eleviate the requirement of you having to find/use another key.

Hmm do as Roy says mate and at last resort phone Microsoft theyare usually pretty good at sorting things out.

My brother in the UK bought a dud "genuine" Dell install DVD and they gave him a genuine key because of the predicament he was in - just wouldn't boot properly from the DVD.

    Hi Roy,

I downloaded one non-netframework update and it installed with no problems. The computer rebooted and everything is working. I will have to have a talk with Amazon about this "new" computer (though now I am very happy with it.).

Thanks so much, I am very grateful for your help.

I'll go to the Backup and Restore section and read about how to create a system image.

And thanks to ICIT for the helpful suggestions.
