Given all the recent problems with Win 7 updates

STo continue from the title makes me wonder why even bother ? all these security breeches and malicious code stuff is only going to get past your very basic user is it not ? unless you work in Government or some top secret agency why bother ? with all this ?... my Win7 update was working last month now it has been running for like 6 hours with zero results.... why bother ?... I might just revert back to Win7 with Service Pack 1 and leave it at that !... no other updates that just seem to slow down and f++k your system up ?

I and many others understand your frustration. Some of us have gone to Linux, using Windows only specialized needs (music creation for me). however, a recent thread here enabled me to finally get past this ridiculous MS crap:

I partially implemented that fix last month on two different machines. For me it was to install KB3138612 and then WU could again search and install just fine. Until this month. Both are stuck at 0% when trying to install this month's updates. Others report the issue and say it may take hours. Kind of ridiculous to have to go through this to install updates MS tells us we need.

edit: It has been suggested that for June KB3161664 needs to be installed first, via download from MS, and then the rest of the updates will download and install via WU. I am in the process of doing just that.

Installing KB3161664 on its own allowed other updates to dl and install. Or at least that's what I think. Maybe they would have worked eventually but doing that did seem to speed it up. Didn't need to stop WU service.

It's not that odd. It happened on my machine first time I ran that KB3161664. That's why I decided to stop WU service before going ahead.

While you were responding I added an edit above to say I did follow your advice and stopped WU service and was able to install KB3161664. After the reboot I am attempting to install 9 other updates. It is still taking its sweet time. Hopefully it will work.

edit: WU has downloaded the other updates and is now installing. Can put this to rest for another month.

I set WU to search for updates but ask to download and install and it actually did retrieve the update list after a while by itself... Ok so I go and start downloading a few manually from the MS update site... install the first one, go to install a second one and Windows Update Service just hangs, used task manager to kill it, try again same thing... reboot the second installed no problem.
Anyway cut the story short now I am only able to manually install one update at a time and having to reboot each time in order to install another !
Never had that problem before now... I ran diagcab and it fixed a few things so it said so just wait and see what happens when I get a few more updates.
